Help selecting an iron set

Hello everyone. I'm not really new to golf but I've always been a casual golfer since I was 10 years old and never really looked into getting new clubs before (always just used my dads). He had some Cambell C-2's. I have no idea how good these clubs are, but they felt good to me and they lasted over ten years so no complaints here.

Now that I have some more money to spend I'm looking into getting a good set of new clubs. I was looking at some Titleist irons. Some used 695 MB's caught my eye as being a good club in my price range. Is this a good choice? I was also looking at some 690.MB's. Whats the difference between these and the 695's?

Also I don't really know what the difference would be between CB and MB. I know it means cavity back and muscle back but I don't know what that translates to in terms of feel or performance.

As some extra information, I'm a mediocre golfer. I shot high 80's low 90's for the most part. I don't know if an expensive iron will really improve my game but I would like a good set to try to improve with. I hit my high irons very well, but I'm not so good with the low irons. I don't know if this is a product of my swing or the clubs I use.

I also need to find a driver and fairway woods but I'll save that for later.

Any advise for a newish golfer?

Based on the handicap listed...I would definitely not recommend the 690 or 695's as they are more of a player's club. If you really want titleist then I would recommend that you look into the 775's or the 755's as they are for more mid to high handicapper's. What is your price range?

Something under $500 used is probably what I'm looking at spending. I wanted to buy used so I could get a better set for a good price. I didn't really look into other brands yet but I'm open to any suggestions.

Also I will have a lot more time to practice and get more rounds in now. I plan on improving that handicap. A lot of my high scores involve my horrible putting and $5 driver (I will upgrade this as well!).

I would suggest you going to a pro and getting fitted and then trying to find a second hand set to fit those specs if you are on a budget. If Titleist is still a desire then there should be some AP1s coming onto the second hand market pretty soon that would probably suit and be good for you to get better with?

I probably have just what you need if your interested...I have a set of Cleveland CG4's that I "grew out of", and I highly recommend them. They are great irons, but I've improved my handicap to the point where I want something with a little more workability rather than forgiveness. I have them posted on here in marketplace if you want to check them out. They are the best irons that I have owned to this point (haven't played my 755's yet since I got them a couple days ago).

the cg4's are probably largely responsible for going from my 30 handicap to my 15ish one now...i would highly recommend them.

For irons in that price range and with your handicap, I would look for something that is a little more forgiving. My recommendations would be the Cobra or Adams line. Both sets are very forgiving and offer nice feel. Also both can definately be had in your price range.

I'm really undecided here. I want to start golfing a lot more now that I hove some time, so I was thinking of going for the MB's. BUT I'm not sure if I can handle the MB's yet. I might have a hard time with them. I'm not sure what set would help me learn faster.

It's not like I'm starting from scratch. I can hit the ball pretty well. Just don't have as much control over the ball as I would like, and I slice it occasionally.

MB's will trow you for a loop if your not on your game...ball striking needs to be good, especially in your long irons. My handicap went up when I switched before it started comming down again. Check out Ebay... if you use paypal you have some protection if the seller tries to mess with you... and check out the seller before you commit... lot of good deals there.. I had Adams before... impossible not to hit them high and strait.

Best advice I can give is to just try a bunch of stuff out. Cleveland makes a couple of great sets that might be good for you, the TA3's and the CG4's. They're both sort of a player's cavity-back. They're workable and set up very nicely at address, and they're solid.

I also like PING a lot. i3's and Eye2's are some of the best they have ever made, imo. Great sets of irons.

There are a ton of great options out there for you. Try things out. You don't need to spend $500 to get a great set of irons, especially if used clubs are all right by you. I just bought 2 sets of blades on eBay in great shape for a combined $250 when original retail would have been well over $1800.

OK. I think I've narrowed it down to the taylor made R7 draw irons or the Titleist 695 CB irons. Anyone one have excperience/opinions on these sets?

stay away from draw-biased sets. you won't know your true swing. and draw irons WILL NOT fix a chronic slicer

I didn't really know what the draw meant. Does it mean it will fix someones draw? or make it easier to draw the ball?

It will make it easier to draw the ball. If you slice your driver, I'd consider looking into the r7 Draw Driver.

I wouldn't suggest the r7 draw irons tho. I had them for a few weeks and I hooked everything.

      I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.

      Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.

      No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.

      StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry

      So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
