My friend and I are playing in two scramble tournaments in the next month or so, and I was wondering if you guys had any good strategical suggestions. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

one of you should play it safe the other should try the miracle shot..

Actually, both of you should play safe, especially if the other guy is a 14 or whatever like you. If you try the "safe/heroic" approach, you're going to be under pressure all day when one of you messes up the safe shot.

My advice? Have fun. That's it. Oh, and have the better putter go second. Beyond that... play your normal game.

yeah, better putter second, and make sure the first putter gets the ball to the whole to give the second putter the break. and have the person playing first try a safe shot. if it's succesful, try to hit a "mirac"

hit greens. scrambles are putting contests. you need to give yourself a chance at birdie every hole.

Definitely concentrate on hitting the greens in regulation. Been there and made that mistake before.

Agree, I played in my first tourney not too long a go, it was a 4-man scramble. My 3 playing partners are probably realistically in the 40-50 handicap range and I am not so sure I can really play to a 21.8 (that's what the USGA computer I post my scores on calculates me at...)

We posted an 86, I felt great and I thought we did awesome! We were using my shots at least 3/4 of the time. When we get back and started looking at the board I realized that a competitive score was something like 11-12 under par for the round. My friend on a better team said, "How did you guys possibly play bogey golf on a scramble?"

Getting GIR and chances at birdie putts is key... For my team, a good chip close to the hole was key for making par, because none of us was good at iron approach shots.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
