I've had many problems with topping of the ball when using my driver. I've been frustrated by trying everything I know to stay down, including teeing it up way high, but nothing seemed to work consistently.

Recently, I decided to move the ball back in my stance, from near my left foot to basically centered. This has made all the difference. More than half my swings result in good contact and straight flight - love the sound my Hibore makes on good contact. Probably 10% of my swings hit the toe of the club, and almost none are topped.

My question is, as a newbie to golf, is this an OK thing to do, or am I setting myself up for problems later on? Believe me, I feel much more confident approaching the tee now, than I ever have before. But should I continue to try to move my ball more towards my left foot? Or just go with what works?

Do whatever your comfortable with. It should hurt you later on, because you shouldn't change it.

Some people play with it centered...I'll do it occasionally.

Avid Golfer... calling Avid Golfer... One of your awesome images showing 20 different pros at address with a driver would be great here!

pittpanther, a lot of pros do not tee the ball off their front foot, but in the middle of their stance... I tee it off the front because that's what I need to do to get good contact and ball flight (predictable high fade).... The key is to do what works consistently so that you can trust yourself to hit a good shot and not wonder what is going to happen.

One other thing you can try....I used to top my drives fairly consistently when I started out, and I figured out it was because i bent my knees too much during address....and I was straightening them on my swing through.....causing me to top the ball. Once I started standing with my knees basically not bent at all, I could put the ball down the middle of the fairway much more reliably than before.

I did this for about a month this season to cure some driving problems. I made some amazing draw shots, but a few other tweaks to improve on my fundamentals, I started drawing the ball too much. I placed the ball back toward the front an inch before or on my left heel and now I'm hitting and slight draw of a straight ball flight. You should be fine... sometimes you just gotta go with what works and more importantly, what you feel most comfortable with.

If you have the capability, post a video of your swing with the driver....down the line and face on. that way we can critique your swing and point out any flaws we see

    • Day (2 May 24) - somehow I missed posting both Tues and Weds practice sessions - so the streak ends and a new one begins…. Focus today was on ball first contact using the Divot Board for reference.   Worked with 7i, 9i and GW hitting hard foam balls.  Started hap hazardly and then settled back into my pre-shot setup.  Much more consistent in the latter.
    • So, Newey is out at Red Bull. Where does he go in a year? Is Max still with RBR in 2026? Hmmmm.
    • August 2010 Woodfin Ridge 18th hole Playing in a large tournament with a slew of friends and the last day was two man best ball. The 18th, when it was bent grass, was very fast due to a steep slope on the right side. I had seen many people over the years putt off the green from above the hole. I hit a great drive and 3W to 30’ left of the hole. With everyone watching my partner hit it way too fast and never high enough and his ball rolled all the way to the bottom of the green.  I hit mine much higher and the ball came to rest about 20” above the hole. Then it slowly started trickling towards the hole for a walkoff eagle! Nobody said anything except my partner who was yelling pretty loudly. I looked at the crowd and told them it was okay to clap because it was a great putt, and they gave me a bunch of polite golf claps and brought me a beer!
    • Day 127: 5/2/24 Stack Full Speed spectrum training session 6/24. Training speed was 5 mph higher than previous high, as was e-speed. Still not as high as I have done in previous programs, but just 1 mph lower. Battling through a neck issue, and possible trigger fingers. Happy with results.
    • Day 49. Played 9 from tees a bit beyond my comfort zone and was humbled. Hit a couple good shots so will take that at least.
