Call it what you will - lag, late release, retention of the angle.
What drills do you do to promote the above?

I had a lesson today and while my hands are slightly ahead of the ball at impact, it could be better.

I've tried:

Low 3/4 low trajectory shots with ball in normal position.

Put ball more forward in stance, try and take divot ahead of ball.

Take normal stance, then take impact position with right leg leaning in and take a 1/2 swing.

Pretend to hit under branch.

Hit a punch shot and stop the swing right after impact, check position.

The impact fix works wonders, and this guy explains it pretty well...My old instructor taught me this and it worked great for me. Sorry if its a little confusing and tedious, but here is the gist-

Just a quick drill that you can do anywhere:

Assuming your a righty:

Grip the top of the club with your left hand, grip the bottom of the grip with your right hand (so that there is a fair gap between the two hands)

Make a few practise swings like this focusing on releasing the club head, the feeling of closing the toe of the club face sometimes helps.

Bobby Clampett devoted an entire book to the subject of proper release.

"The Impact Zone" focuses on the importance of lag in achieving the holy grail - a swing that bottoms out 4" in front of the ball.
