I'm going with a 9 degree driver/15 degree 3 wood and then an 18 degree 2 iron but eventually, i'd like to move to an 8.5º/13.5/18 degree or a 9.5º/15.5º/19º format BUT, should i go with a 5 wood or a hybrid club? Or should i stick with a 2 iron like i have now? It's a tough decision. Courses are getting longer and longer and i think having a 5 wood is pretty necessary in today's game.

As you say courses are getting longer but from my perspective I hit my hybrids (17 and 22) better than my 2 or 3 iron. Demo a few and see what works for you. Use a simulator to understand your distance changes if any.

I just ordered a PingG10 hybrid yesterday.

I'm hoping it'll fit the gap between my 3-wood and 3-iron nicely and be easier to hit than a 1 and 2 iron.

This is my first hybrid....gonna be interesting.

Guess it depends on what kind of lies you find yourself in. the 5 wood is the most used club in my bag for 2nd shots and I can make it work in the first cut of rough but anything longer I grab an iron. I own hybrids but for the courses I play I found I rarely used them so they've been staying home lately.

I have tried both 20* hybrid (Callaway Heavenwood 3 hybrid with steel shaft) as well as a 5-wood (various).
I came to the conclusion that I get the same distance with both clubs. Only the 5-wood is easier to hit from the tee and the hybrid is easier to hit from the rough or in bunkers when you have a clean lie. So I went with the hybrid because I like being able to get out of the rough with some distance.

I use 2 hybrid. A 2 (16°) and a 4 (23°). I use them from the rough, off the tee and sometime in fairway bunker.

Driver is a 9.5° and 3 wood is 13°.... I really like this set-up and not many holes...

Good luck with your decision.

PS: I have the Taylor Made Dual TP hybrid... awesome.

I have a Bobby Jones 5 wood (that matches the three wood i'm using) but I prefer to go with the 3 iron, 19* hybrid, in my Ping G5. I just CRUSH it and it goes perfectly straight everytime - I really don't have a ball pattern with it, I swear, it's probably the straightest club in my bag.

It's really on feel. I'm looking into getting a Titleist 3 wood that I'll use but I love my Hybrid 4-iron.

What I'll probably end up doing is using the Wood on short par 4's or when my driver isn't going well, and use the Hybrid in the fairway.

That being said if I can find a deal for a new Nike hybrid set and use them as woods, I will.

Talk about weird timing. I've been looking into the Nike Hybrids for some time, and all this talk prompted me to take a run over to Foxy Golf. I go in and tell the clerk, "I'm looking for some used Nike hybrids, but I'm not willing to take a hit to the wallet for them."

Guess what they have? Nike CPR hybrids (26* being the one I desired most) on clearance for 1/3 the normal Nike price - never hit before, still have the plastic on them...what are the odds? I didn't have cash with me so I'm having it held and will pick it up within the hour. I've bought 600 dollars worth of clubs this past week, between each they've been hit twice (total), and I've spent $200. Good week. I'll sub one of the hybrids and carry a wood so I have that option midround to go with whatever one is working.

FWIW, I carried 3,5, and 7 woods for several years. I hit them fairly well. When I replaced my 4 iron with a hybrid, I began to realize how easy it was to hit hybrids. Gradually, I replaced my woods with hybrids.

Woods typically have a longer shaft and the weight of the club is a bit farther back than in a hybrid, so for the same loft, a fairway wood might go a bit farther. However, and perhaps because of the fact that a hybrid has a shorter shaft, it is a bit easier to control than a comparable fairway wood. I find the control of the hybrid preferable to the increased distance of the fairway wood.

I also find the hybrid more versatile: easy off the fairway or tee, better out of the rough, easier to shape a shot, easier to hit a low shot out from under the damn trees and easier to chip with.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
