Since I started trying to improve my game, I've heard some people say that hybrids are easier to hit than long irons. I have found just the opposite. I've started using long irons where most people would use hybrids and have had good success. What makes a hybrid so much easier to hit(supposedly)?

I think they are easier to hit out of the rough and more forgiving off the tee. I think its good to have one hybrid. I love the 3 and 4 irons in my bag and can hit them fine, but my 2 iron hybrid is dynamite as well. If your having good succes with your long irons, then good! But hybrids are extremely popular for a reason. Have you tried hitting a few?

Yes I have two of them. When I can get the ball in the air it slices badly. I know this is a product of my bad swing but most of the time I can not even get the ball three feet off the ground. Plus I don't think I have ever hit my hybrids straight.

I carry a 3 iron hybrid/rescue T.made draw. It flies thru the rough like butter. Its probably the best purchase I've made this year.

I think the reason people say they're easier to hit is because the way long irons can get hung up in the long stuff. The heel/hosel area of a long iron can be grabbed by some long rough and the club just stops! But a hybrid rescue is built so it does NOT get hung up. At least it certainly feels that way.

I also put an oversize grip on my rescue club, making me feel even more relaxed with the club. I don't feel like I have to use my hands and wrists as much allowing me to make good contact and the ball really flies. My hybrid/rescue is my "under a tree saviour". Love it

You might already know this, but a hybrid is about as long as your five iron. Where are you playing the ball in your stance?

I think the reason why hybrids are so popular is because there is more weight behind the ball and there is more loft, so its easier for people to hit a hybrid. Correct me if Im wrong...
With a long iron, you have to generate a lot of clubhead speed just to get the ball up in the air.

I'm playing the ball in the middle of my stance. I took a lesson earlier this year and the instructor suggested that I hit in the middle for the time being. Do you think if I move the ball forward in my stance, it might help my slice with my driver, woods and hybrids? Mike

They are easier to hit compared to long irons, because there's this significant bulge behind the club face that is supposedly help you get the ball in the air easily (lower CG), help you on off center hits (wider face), and even help you hit the ball nicely on minor fat shots (wider sole).

With due respect, I see you're a high handicap and I can relate to my experience when I was starting out playing golf. I, too, thought hybrids are tougher to use than long irons. Now with more experiences of hitting on different lies on the course, hybrids indeed are much easier to use. Way easier than long irons they should be illegal to use Why? I can flush almost every shots with 21 deg hybrid, but not always with 3-iron. If I may give my opinion, I think you should focus more on short-mid irons at your handicap. When you're able to ace most of your shots with mid irons eg.6 iron, then move up to 5-4-3 irons. By then you'll realize the toughness hitting long irons. But....! I might be wrong. You could be one of those rare people with mad skills using long irons.

my swing coach suggested using a 7wood instead of a hybrid, it has more shot capabilities and floats the ball just like a hybrid and I can cover my 2/3 iron with it. I have to admit that it feels great and hits the ball dead nuts every time.

I used to use a 4H, now I use a 4I. I still have a 3H and an MP FLI-HI 3-iron, the latter of which I've been preferring as of late.

It's a preference thing. Hit both, see which you like.

    • Context:  I am on vacation, so I don't have access to my indoor practice room, and I won't for about a month. Day 12 (August 22).  Today's weather was not one where even I was going to be outside.  For whatever reason, I didn't do the putting drill today.  There was a drill I remembered from this site (the article was something akin to "five things you can do to improve that don't require talent") that involved having an iron along the back from stance, moving to backswing and holding, then moving to forward swing and holding.  So I did that for five minutes today. I also spent 90 minutes at the gym;  my main motivation for getting stronger is golf related (and I really should get back to Fit For Golf  specific workouts;  I'm not sure when I lost that habit, a poor choice on my part that I did).  Funny story, I spent 20 minutes on the Stairmaster today at the gym (the rest was weights and rests), a device I started with shortly after I took up golf because I read something about it in a Butch Harmon book.  I should be following FFG Mike's fitness advice though, not some memory of someone else.
    • Day 8 8-22 Worked on backswing length and getting some speed in backswing. Recorded swings. Was happy with practice session tonight.
    • Day 325 - 2025-08-22 Practiced for almost an hour after cleaning my cabinets to account for the new GEARS cameras and helping @OBlum for a bit. Exaggerating the same old things.
    • Yea, faster greens = shorter putting stroke. You can be more accurate.  Really, I think people who struggle with distance control struggle just as much on slow greens as fast greens. I've seen people blast putts 10-FT past the hole on 8 or 9 STIMP as much as 11-12 STIMP.  I prefer faster greens. Usually means the putting surface is better and again, shorter putting stroke.
