I recently purchased an R7 SuperQuad on eBay. In looking back I was not smart about researching the seller well enough. After 2 days of digging, I now have a complaint out with PayPal and with eBay.

After doing my own research, it appears the eBay username may have been valid, but was illegally stolen. This user was in the US, but the item payment went to someone in China. Then I was actually provided a tracking number, which is valid, and the item is coming from China. Also, the seller was yanked from eBay only hours after my payment was made. I am almost 100% positive that when I get this club it will be a fake.

This is a warning to anyone looking to buy clubs from eBay. I realize not all sellers are bad, but a lot can be.

I will update this post as I go through my proceedings to help others on this site. All I want is my money back, so I will update what I do, and what the results are in case someone else finds themselves in this unfortunate situation.

Here is a link to a forum discussion. Reading this makes you sick. Halfway down the third page of posts there are pictures of what to look for on some clubs.

Here is a link to someone who did extensive research.

I bought my irons from eBay, and they are 100% legit and nice. I will provide some links in the original post.

I was looking for a ping driver one time and do a little research to find out a lot of them were fake. Ever since then, I just shy away from ebay when looking for clubs. I just don't want to take the chance.

This is why I NEVER buy off eBay. I'm just too worried about this kind of mess.

I realize eBay can be great though, and that this doesn't happen that often.

Makes me wonder if my R7 Draw is legit. Seller is very reputable, came in original Taylor Made packaging, and headcover.

What was the final price with shipping if you don't mind me asking... Was it 'too good to be true'?

Sorry for your loss...

To be honest, it probably was. The listing had a picture of the club with factory wrapping etc. Exactly like I have seen in retails stores. I am sure the picture will turn out to be fake also. Final price with shipping was 190.

got fake r-7 3 wood from china, seller had good reviews. Golfsmith confirmed it was fake, best fake they had seen but fake. Had a burner sticker on the shaft and the weight ports didn't look right(compared to my r-7 driver). Gave it to dad for Christmas(he has a clone r-7 driver) and got real one on sale at golfsmith.

Did you try to return it? Or did you contact eBay about the seller etc?

I got scammed a year ago too..and I consider myself a veteran Ebayer. The guy hijacked someone elses account. I got a TM R7 460 but it was obviously such a bad counterfeit. Without going into details everything was wrong including the NON-REMOVABLE weights.

BE CAREFUL when filing your PayPal claim. PayPal is even guilty of their practice as well. WAIT until you get your bogus item before you file. If you file BEFORE you get your bogus item you will run into problems later. This is what I ran into. I repeat, WAIT until you receive your bogus item before you file a claim. It's a total CATCH-22 with PayPal onthis issue.

Well, since I already filed the claim, mind enlightening me as to what I can expect?

Yeah that is an EXTREMELY good price. 280-300 (Which is there retail now) is still good IMHO.

I hope you get a real one, but that doesn't seem likely Check the weights when you get it though, I heard fakes aren't made with Tungsten weights instead of some sort of plastic. I have a Quad so if you need Hi Res photo's for comparison just let me know...

What kind of claim did you file? Did you file it before or after you received the bogus club?

See my first post, the club is currently "en route". I originally opened a "dispute", but because the user was removed from eBay, it was automatically escalated to a "claim".

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
