by "it" i mean your golf swing/game.

Newbie here.

I have been golfing since roughly 1981. By golfing i mean i had a mediocre swing that lead to fades/slices and not much distance. I was never real serious about the game, just played when i had the time.

In 2006 I decided to join a golf league. Well after using the same old mediocre swing the first year i made the decision that i wanted to get better.

Long story short, in the last few weeks my swing changes have began to make a real difference in my game. Longer shots, straighter shots, less duffed shots, and better putting. One example is the 9th hole of my round last Friday in my league. I usually am hitting a 5 or 6 iron into the green after a weak drive. Well i was hitting a 9 iron into that green last Friday after a great drive.

Of course I still have a ways to go but i finally have a pretty good swing on which to base my game.

My handicap has gone from an 11 to a 6 (nine holes) since i started in the league.

Great site!!

I know how you feel. I gave up playing golf about 8 years ago and just recently picked the game back up.
Im back to practicing every day and Im starting to get back to where I was before (I was a bogey golfer on average).
It doesnt get much better than feeling you get when you know the instant you make contact with the ball that you hit a good shot.

Same place as Wi above, just got back into it heavily and was usually shooting in the low 90's before, now after some years off just trying to break 100!
ON a few occasions (years ago) it started to click for me and that was what messed me up I think. After a few great rounds I became way too critical of my game and began hating playing when I wasn't playing too well, so I basically lost all happiness with the game.
Now, I am just happy being out there and working on my game, but more happy to just be out in the beautiful world.

My life as a musician can/has helped my golf game, which pertains to the OP's topic...WHen it clicks you don't often know it right away. Seems like you work and work at it and just keep going uphill, then one day when your not thinking about making it to the top of that next plateau...you just hit it and are there...in which comes the real joy of accomplishment.
Thing is, for me, each level/plateau takes more work and is harder to reach.

Have fun and enjoy what you do!

Well, my game still hasn't "clicked" overall, but I have had a few moments when everything felt great, and then the ball went exactly where I was hoping and better.

Last Tuesday, we were out playing 9. I am the worst golfer in our little evening league, but I've only been playing for a few months.

After the first 5 holes, I was playing miserably. Finally one of the guys says to me, "Joe, I noticed that your practice swings look pretty good and relaxed. But, when you go to hit your real shot, you tense up and get stiff. Try relaxing."

I said, "Wow. Sounds good. Ok, I'll pay attention to that."

I hit the best shots of my life after that. I was feeling good, I was staying relaxed with my practice swings, and then staying relaxed with my real swing. The ball was going longer and straighter than ever before.

It totally "clicked" for those 3 holes.

    • Thank you.  I'll cross it off the list since it isn't going to achieve what I want.
    • While it does turn out that both Tiger and Phil are less squeaky clean than I previously believed, I don't think golf quite has the worst in professional sports.  Or maybe they're better at image management.   Obviously I'm not fond of Phil's issue we're discussing in this thread (or his involvement with LIV) or Tiger's choices of how to drive.  I used to really like Dustin Johnson and, even before the LIV situation, we started to hear rumors that he bought more snow than Seward, although I don't think those stories were ever substantiated.  Meanwhile, I did think of Anthony Kim as the "good, bad boy" of the tour for a while fifteen years ago because of his party persona -- and if it turns out the worst he did was show up hung over to play (barring what one thinks of LIV), that's pretty good.  And I'm still happy he found a way to get his life clean. If we contrast that with some other sports I enjoy, I'm sure we could find a nice long list of NFL players that, at one point in my life, I was quite fond of, we get far worse disappointments (to put it mildly).
    • Answering that properly would land me in hot water, so I'm not going to. I don't think that many people would do that. I think that in certain circumstances many people would be willing to overlook someone doing that. But I was really referring to what I assumed was Tiger's transgressions (cheating on his wife) not Phil's.
    • No! Is a large part of the human population selfish, apathetic and cuts corners in the name of self-preservation 'more than they would like to admit', yes. Degenerate, scum, etc?.. no!! Most humans/men would not grope a woman like Phil is accused of doing (I think he absolutely did). That is scum. I mean what % of men do you think would do that? Seriously??
