Hello, I just registered. Long Island, NY. GHIN 17. In The Bag: Launcher 460/10.5*, Callaway BB 3W/15*, Titleist 804 OS 3-PW, Cleveland 588 56* and 60*, Odyssey WS #1. I've only been playing since April 05 but I'm a lifelong Baseball and Tennis player so I picked it up quick. Love the game, strike the ball well, have a fluid swing with good tempo and out of 66 rounds this year I have never been embarassed on the course. That being said, I have never shot lower than 86, (Short Game Woes), and am learning and practicing every day. I did take 5 lessons from a PGA Pro in September of 04 and 1 more in July of 05. I'm smart enough to know that if you're not in the company of other golfers, you shouldn't talk about golf. People get annoyed. But, golfers never get enough. This was my incentive for joing the forum. Perhaps I'll pick up some good advice. Thank you, Ron

Look for Rafi, he may need a few new playing buddies, and he's in your area.

Great! What lesson do you think has helped you the most?

Indeed, I can assure you that you're in the company of golfers here! Welcome to the forum.

Erik: Without question it was the 6th lesson. I had all the basics down and was hitting all clubs fairly well but I knew something wasn't on the button. He looked at 3 swings and smiled at me. I had a "Big Power Drain", and was swaying back to front vs a level shoulder turn over a fixed pivot. By using the power stored in my coil, I really started putting it out there where I knew it should be. I'm not a big guy, (5'7"/145) but I now hit my 8 iron 150 yards every time and like a lazer beam. Feels great! The one area I'm going to work on at the range over the Winter is; the 3 Wood off the deck. When I catch it on the screws, it goes around 220 yards but I'm not consistent like I am with all the other clubs. Also, hitting a fairway wood off of "Tight Lie Turf" at this time of year does not lend itself to monitoring progress. When I'm on the course now and have a second shot over 200 yards on a long 4 or par 5, I just lay up with my 3 iron which I can hit about 200 yards.

It's funny because I usually shoot under 86 or around 86, but I am always embarassing myself on the course. :/

Welcome man, and you will definitely learn a lot about the game of golf here at The Sand Trap. Just let us know if you need anything.. Have a good one.

Thanks Thrash13: You get embarassed on the course because you're a young fella full of P&V; who can probably hit the "Snot" out of the ball. I'm an older gentleman, and we hit it gently down the middle and don't give a Rat's Ass what other people say or think! Keep hittin' em long and straight, and stay outta that "Bull Butter".

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
