At least 2 or 3 times in a round, my clubface will twist open on the downswing and I will hit the ball way, way right. What exactly causes this? I tried changing gloves and that wasn't it. I use Mizuno MX-25 irons with the stock grips. Are they not tacky enough for me? Should I grip a little tighter? I try to avoid an abrupt change in direction once I get to the top of my backswing, because I was thinking that was the cause...but now I'm not sure.

what kind of grip are you using? baseball, interlocking, overlapping?
is face twisting open or are your arms swinging so hard that you don't allow the face to close?

I use overlapping and no I am not swinging too hard.

The club twists a little open on the downswing about 2 or 3 times a round. It doesnt happen often, but when it does, the results are devastating to my score.

I used to get that, but I realised in my case the club face wasnt twisting open in the downswing, i was just hitting completely off the toe of the club, so it felt like it had twisted open.

If the club was going to slip in your hands I would imagine it would happen quite consistently during a round, not once or twice.

It could well be a swing fault, could you get videos of your swing up loaded?

I used to do this (it still happens once in a rare while). I think the cause was gripping down way too tight at the transition from backswing to downswing. When I started to try to be more natural the problem faded away.

The other thing is it's never a bad thing to check your grip to be sure you're doing exactly what you want to be doing with it. You can't ballpark the grip. With the right combination of technical grip and natural, but not aggressive, grip pressure, you'll be able to get out of this rut.

Do you wear a glove? I used to go gloveless and then I took a trip to Palm Desert - my palms were sweating so much that the club would slide out of my hand and it just destroyed my confidence. Started using a glove on that trip and I'll never, ever go back. If you're not using a glove, try it, it'll help too.

The last thing is no matter what you do, and how good you get at any sport, you will from time to time mishandle whatever you're trying to do. NBA guys still dribble off their toes once in a while, some NFL QB fumbles trying to throw once or twice each season, and you might recall Henrik Stenson whipping a 3-wood off the tee about 75 yards dead left into a cactus at the head-to-head tournament at the beginning of this season.

You can't be perfect. Good luck with this!

I think it does happen somewhere in the transition to the downswing. But wouldn't gripping "looser" make it happen more often? When you say to "try and be more natural"...exactly what do you mean?

thanks for the help.

I don't know that you're doing the same thing, but what I was doing was getting sorta stressed out about the shot and gripping really hard. The problem with this is it's impossible make a decent swing and sustain that much grip pressure, so my hands would loosen during the swing, and I would sometimes lose control of the club.

By "more natural" I just mean more athletic. You should feel loose with your arms when you're standing over the ball, and when you grip hard you cannot do that.

Gripping "looser" won't make you lose control because it should allow you to be consistent with your grip pressure. The club shouldn't go anywhere.

Sounds like maybe you need to go with a stronger grip. I suffer from this same problem from time to time and what I found helps is that when you left index finger and right pinker finger overlap/interklock to put a little pressure on your right pinkie finger with your left index finger. It helps to make your hands work together more and the pressure gives you a stronger grip.
It also helps to make sure when you grip the club that your left thumb is snugly inside the v that is formed by your thumb and fingers in your right hand.
Not sure if that makes much sense or not...

I got a lesson today that seemed to have cured my "twisties". You should be able to grip the club in your left hand oiut in front of you and let go of all the fingers, but the index finger and be able to hold the club in the crook of the index finger, with the club grip held in place by the meaty pad of your left palm. This makes for a very snug grip, with having to squeeze to hard.

Glad you got it fixed. Make sure you waggle the club before every shot. That helps me get the right grip pressure for the shot im about to make or I should say the shot im about to attempt.

Are you gripping the club in your fingers? The club shouldn't twist if you have it gripped properly in the fingers.

i have this same problem and almost always with my driver. I bought the driver used. 7.5* loft and 44 and a half inch graffaloy stiff shaft. It seems I can't find the sweet spot and hit more off the toe and slice it, but with my 5 wood I hit it 230 yds. and is usually straight maybe a slight fade. I was thinking about having the driver shaft cut down some. I can average close to 300yds when I hit the sweet spot and the ball is straight, I just lose confidence having the thought of slicing it in the back of my mind.

My question is do you guys think trimming the shaft length down some would help with me controlling the drive a lil more. I am at the very tip of 6' and was fitted a std length iron set. thanks for any info. sorry for thread hijacking

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
