Well, I was at the range today working on things, and I think I found it. I'll give you the rundown, I'll make as concise as possible. I got myself a 170 bucket at the range and started my normal routine of shortest to longest. I was hitting pretty well through all clubs including driver. Don't get me wrong, there were some bad shots where I had to take a break and relax. So I got to the end of the bucket and decided to hit some wedge shot to the pin. Thats when things went bad.... shot all over the place!!! I stopped and thought to myself.. "Let's slowdown your backswing and concentrate on that". Sure enough it worked!!! If I concentrate on a slow and deliberate backswing everything comes together. Wondering if any of you have noticed that in your game?

Well I hate swing thoughts and would consider myself a feel player. But I noticed some time ago I was outperforming, relative to our handicaps, most of my playing partners in windy conditions. I thought it was because I hit the ball a little low. But then I remembered how when it's windy I'm always repeating in my head the maxim "when it's breazy swing easy". I've always been slow back, you can spot my swing 2 fairways away.

I think it depends on your style, and I'm glad it works for you too. I once heard Nick Price say something to the effect that he has to keep his tempo up to make sure things don't fall apart. I think it's all just how you're wired. Congrats on you coaching yourself so well.

Thanks for the kudo's. Much appreciated! Going back to the range this morning to work on it a little more before playing this afternoon. I'll let you know how it goes.

This is just my second post, so I don't have an intro yet - but short and consise - I'm a newbie. Maybe 6 weeks and only 27 holes to my name. But I have been practicing enough to make my wife think I have a mistress. While I still am working on my long game, I have gotten pretty darn good at my PW.

I have an electric pole running down the back of my neighborhood - I can hit it about 50 yards out. My backswing is in direct relation to the distance. It's slow and easy - and I trust the club to the work for me. If I need a little further, I just go back a little further - but still slow and deliberate.

Works for me.

A slow backswing is perfect,i find myself sometimes out of sync and its usually related to whipping the club back to quick.Everytime i stand over a ball now i say to myself "you have plenty of club to get there" and it helps me to swing smooth besides trying force it there.

Get a book called Tour Tempo. This will explain everything about tempo. Should help you out a lot. You're actually running into something that every golfer goes through - the search for the magic move. There isn't one. Your "slow deliberate" backswing will change as you get more experienced. What you need is a measureable tempo.

Thanks for the tip - I'll look into the book. I reread my post and I don't want to come across as a robot. It's slow and deliberate, but fluid (if that makes sense?)

I have a pretty good tempo with my 3W. My second time on the course yesterday, and I hit about 12-13 fairways right down the center. I can't do it with my driver yet, so I'm sacrificing yards, but my score went from a 133 (driver) to a 118 (3W off tee) in a span of 4 days.

I tried a slow motion take away and a slow motion release to the ball or uncoiling of my hips and shoulder to the ball without any effort with solid contact with the ball gave me more confidence in my new swing then I have ever have.

Whats even nicer is that the slow backswing allows me to take a full backswing with my hips and shoulders so that I can find my timing and tempos of my swing prior to playing a round of golf.

This is what happens to me, if I try to slow down my arms and shoulders take over, things just don't happen in the right order for me then.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
