I never buy golf balls and usually hit whatever I find on the course. I've collected quite a few good quality high spin balls such as V1, NXT Tour, B330, etc. I don't use them and just keep them at home. I was wondering when is a good time to start using these high spin balls?

That depends on you the player. If you feel as though you are at a stage in your game when you want to put a little more spin on the ball, then NOW is the time. Otherwise, keep doing what your doing.

Keith,

Try playing with the same brand of ball each round. If you start with Titleist, keep playing a Titleist all 18. If you start with a Bridgestone, play with a Bridgestone.

You can switch from a Pro V1 to an NXT on different holes, sure, but once you put a ball in play, stick with that brand. If you lose a ball in the woods or water, take out a provisional ball of the same name.

As for your question, start using a high spin ball asap. Why not use one? If i were you, i would find a ball you really liked and stick with it. Suggestions from me for where you're at :

Titleist DT Roll, Bridgestone e5, Top Flite Gamer

If you have these nice golf balls why not just play with them...what are you saving them for? lol.

Driver Ping G10 10.5*
Hybrids Ping G5 (3) 19* Bridgestone J36 (4) 22*
Irons Mizuno MP-57 5-PW
Wedges Srixon WG-504 52.08 Bridgestone WC Copper 56.13
Putter 33" Scotty Cameron Studio Select #2

I'm not a much of a distance player so the loss in distance due to changing to higher spin balls don't phase me. I hit my 6-iron 160 and driver on average 250-260. Out of curiosity, how much distance will I lose? The point of a high spin ball is basically to have the ball sit once landing on the green?

I have some rounds that I don't lose a ball and some rounds I lose 5, so I guess I should try to buy some used golf balls to keep the ball same.

Why play the same brand out of curiousity?

Well, my ballstriking isn't the greatest so I just thought that my shot dispersion would be greater with these high spin balls on mishits.

I like the idea of using the same ball for a round , golf is so much of a feel game, and each companies ball has a different feel. remember, these balls will spin off wedges more, as well as drivers. the faster the greens are the more spin i need to keep it close, also if im not driving the ball well, the farther offline it will go. give them a try, i play Titleist proV1 because i like the way they feel off the irons and putter, as well as the spin. THat what i think for what its worth. -AL B

what i was saying about using one ball is because if you ever played in a competition or tournament, rules state that you can only use one brand of ball per round and only one ball per hole (unless that ball is lost). What i'm saying is, try to get to used to one brand. It helps your game out more than you would as well...your shots will be more consistent if you know how your ball reacts as opposed to using 10 different ball types that are all made differently.

That's not true all of the time, since the Tournament Committee can declare that rule in effect or not depending what they want.

Here's what I play:

Just ordered 2 dozens of NXT Tour, 1 dozen of NXT Extreme, and 1 dozen of DT Solo from Knetgolf.com. All were grade B but they were no more than $5.99/dozen so...

Don't forget that you hit and make the ball travel, the ball itself is not telepathic.

Just tried a couple NXT Tours that I had and not happy with it. I think the NXT Extremes are better for me. My slight fade turned into a considerable fade/slice.

keep trying different balls and find one you like. eventually, move up to a tour grade ball.

some to try out :

Titleist Pro V1/V1x
Callaway Tour i/ix
Taylor Made TP Red/Black
Bridgestone B330/B330S
Nike One Black/Platinum

There are also excellent balls out there like the Wilson Zip which i'm just starting to use. If it continues to perform well, i might replace my Pro V1s with them!

Before they go bad.

Use them when you're comfortable using them. Or trade them (2-for-1 hopefully) for some of the non-premium balls if that's what you like to play. Or just use them whenever. Maybe when the greens are really firm one day, or when you're playing a nicer course. No sense staring at them though - they're made to be hit. Hit 'em.

Yeah, that's what I'd suggest too, hit those golf balls, why wait? If you think you're intimidated by them, trade them for other useful golf balls...

How long before golf balls go bad? I haven't been going through too many golf balls a round. Maybe lose one at the most. So it might take some time to play all the balls I bought and saved.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
