OK - I know similar posts have been created about the topic of benefits of club fitting but this is a somewhat different question. I fully understand the advantages of custom club fitting and would recommend it to anyone.

I went to get my Callaway X-20 Tours fitted last summer at a local driving range. The guy at the pro shop said I was about 2 degrees upright. I'm 6 foot and arms span is slightly longer than my height. Although the fitting was completely dynamic, using a lie board.

After about a season of playing these Irons I was consistently hitting shots left, and this is a common problem of clubs that are too upright. So I brought them to a Golfsmith and had them fitted again. Long story short I had to send them back to Callaway to get the lie angle back to even. My swing did change a bit but the guy said I was hitting it dead center on the sole. No reason to adjust and the shaft length was perfect.

My question is, after playing with the Callaway’s I'm ready to trade in, can't work the ball as much and going get the Mizuno MP-67. Should I get these fitted also or just go with Standard/Standard on the dimension? Can anyone truly have a standard fitting with no adjustments needed?

Just to clarify after getting the lie angles brought back to even I was puring the ball. It was like Night and Day.

its always nice to be fitted but honestly if you know your shaft flex and are sure a standard length shaft a standard set is sometimes the best route to go.

I waited for 8 weeks for my macgregor set, looking back I would rather have just pulled a set off the wall and spent the extra 50 bucks to have a clubmaker bend the sticks to the correct lie

edit: this obviously would only apply for the mizunos or if you choose a forged stick

I recently bought a set of standard Titleist. My standard length Mizuno's are longer and the lie angles seem a little flatter. The standards are diff from one company to the next. Just go have them fitted by a Mizuno rep. Probably have an off the rack set bent in the store for free before you leave. That way the Mizuno rep will be doing the fitting.

Like Harry Longshanks mentioned, different manufacturers use different specs for "standard". However, the specs are listed on their websites, so it's not hard to check. The Callaway X20 Tour 6 iron is 37.5 in long with a lie angle of 61.5 degrees. The Mizuno Mp-67 6 iron is 37.25 in and 61 deg.

Since the X20 Tours fit you perfectly and you hit them flush, I would just say order the Mizunos at the same length/lie as those and save yourself the cost/trouble of the fitting since you already know your specs. This is assuming you are going to use the same type of shaft...if not, you may still want to get fitted for flex, etc.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
