He was trying to get up and down for par which he would've.

For what it's worth, I agree with you - picking up one's own ball when the shot was not conceded is conceding the hole. He conceded the hole to you.

And my point is that it's perfectly within the gentleman's game (and likewise quite sporting) to let a player have gimmes and then ask him to putt late in the round. I'm not criticizing anybody who plays with gimmes on the front nine and then asks for putts on the back nine.

That isn't the situation you described. You didn't game him by making him putt late in the round. He assumed you weren't going to change and then you took advantage of his assumption because the opportunity presented itself; it wouldn't have mattered on hole 7, but you took whatever you could get on 17. That's like playing a physical pickup game to 20 points and then calling fouls to keep your opponent from counting his winning basket. It's poor sportsmanship, in my opinion.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

When I play I make everything. There is no such thing as a gimmie. This actually angers people when they tell me a 3 footer is good and I mark it, What I do is probably unecessary but whatever...my putting is phenomanal.

Its not being rude, he was never given the right to pic up his ball bu his competitor, so its under the penalty of loss of the hole. his tendency of giving putts through the round up until that hole has nothing to do with that hole.

Giving questionable putts then making them putt 6 inchers is actually a common strategy in match play. I dont see how its rude.
