I was in Sports Authority just looking around at what drivers are out there, and came across and Cleveland HiBore XL Gold, and a TOUR version of it, both marked at $149.99. (I can probably find it for lower).

Does the HiBore keep up with the other drivers on the market? And what difference does the TOUR version make?

Did you notice we had a review of the club?

It's a good driver. Don't know what you have now, so can't really say if it's a step up or not, and I'm not a fan of buying off-the-rack anyway. Get fit, generally, or at least hit them in the little hitting area they have at most Dick's stores.

Ok, so after some reading I think I'll be better off getting my dream club. The original Nike Sasquatch.

I am getting an 8.5 loft w/ a UST Proforce V2 Stiff Shaft. Although I was wondering, do these stiff shafts run extra stiff or a little more whippy? Or just perfect? I can't afford fitting.

you should try and get the notion of extra stiff, stiff and regular out of your head, each manufacturer is different, each shaft actually varies from the same manufacturer between models and even with the same model, what is an x stiff? its just a label that says this shaft is stiffer than the s and weaker than the tour x.

FSA, they'll normally fit you for free if you're buying the club thru them.

but if you're going to a specialized fitter for your game, they'll charge you, but it's worth it. the degree of loft, I'd say is a MUST to get fit for when it comes to the driver b/c you want optimal launch conditions. back spin rate, reduced side spin.. launch angle etc. so even though you launch it high, the 8.5 might not be for you. i had that issue when i got my driver..i was better off with a 9.5 instead of 8.5 the proforce v2 shaft is a mid-high launch which would kind of negate the 8.5 loft. what kind of driver are you using now? and shaft? as for the "whippiness" that all depends on what you're currently using. the torque on your shaft is 3.3....so it's about...let's say a little stiffer playing than a standard 3.5 torque stiff flex shaft that come on most drivers. hope this helps.

My previous driver was a R7 Draw 10.5* Regular Flex. Was a little too "whippy" for me, and I launched the ball way too high.

FSA the reason for the high launch could be the shaft of your 10.5 in conjunction with the 10.5. How'd you hit it though? aside from how high the ball went. did you fade it, draw it, push it, etc.
it's hard to tell when you're using a draw biased club what you'll need from your next driver.

I'd say try both the 9.5 and 10.5 in the HiBoreXL.
the shaft plays a HUGE difference. it's like running your car on 4 cyls vs. 6 cyls. it's a completely different beast once you change the shaft.
the stock shafts on last year's hiborexl's depend on the golf or red shaft that's on the driver. they have different characteristics.

I believe the gold is standard trajectory and the red is a lower one.

IF you're comfortable with how you currently control the ball, there's no need to go stiff. the stiff will definitely help you control the ball off the tee. but if you're not pushing the ball, casting it, or hitting that awesome slice, there's really no need to go to a stiff shaft.

If you're mainly concerned with: keeping it on a lower ball flight try this setup

hiborexl 9.5 degree with the red or gold shaft. you can even try the 10.5 in a red shaft....and then work your way to a different shaft with a high kickpoint to keep the ball lower than the standard.

the 8.5 is HARD to hit imo. remember the lower you go in loft, the more compounded your results are. So your baby fade witih a 10.5 will turn into a bigger fade with the 8.5. it's a little easier to miss hit and get bad results with a lower degree lot in the driver. so i'd make the compromise and go in b/t 10.5 & 8.5.

The "tour" version has a 2 degree open face which is supposed to help you work the ball with a fade.

you can instant message me if you have any questions.

I settled with a club a little different. I got the Sasquatch Sumo Squared 5300 w/ Stock Diamana Stiff shaft. I needed a club a bit more forgiving as driving is the worst part of my game.

    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
