I live in San Francisco, CA and the average home prices are about $725,000 for a 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom home with about 1,500 square feet.

What is the average price home in your city going for?

Plummeting. With the exception of Las Vegas, the West Coast of FL has the home prices plummetting faster than any other city according to a recent study by the Wall Street Times (about 4 months ago). According to the San Fran. Sentinel the average home price where you are is $497,110 as of Oct 2007. Where I am it is about $312,000. But I really think that is skewed by how large the "tampa bay area" is. They are including, St Pete, Clearwater, etc...

you can't find a decent home for $500k in SF, you might be able to buy a studio or one bedroom condo.

Not sure on the average, but our4bed 3bath 2800sqft home on 1 acre is approx 160-180K........I'm sure if would be worth over 1mil in SF.

I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

My folks just put their 2900 sf 4/3/2 on the market for $205,000

It's pretty well the median in their neighborhood.

The same house in a good part of Dallas would run ~$350k

My house is apartment sized. I bought it when I was single, and then got married, and now have a kiddo (it's REALLY cramped) I paid $40k for it 8 years ago, on 1/3 of an acre, and I'm right in the middle of town (1/2 mile from the university, 1/2 mile from the interstate, it's a great location)

I want to move out to IL. hows the weather and the golfing?

This year has been tough. We started really late because of the long winter and the weekends this summer have not been great. The weekend of the 4th was nice but now it is getting hot and humid.

Golfing in the suburbs of Chicago is good but I wouldn't call it cheap. $50-$80 for a decent course. $90-$150 will get you good courses. I don't know what it's like golfing in Quincy though. Usually towns on the river have decent cheap courses.

Played my 1st round of the year in March. Down here it's $22 + cart for weekends on the best public around. The big difference is we have to drive a couple hours to get anywhere really swanky.

Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater market is in the toilet. I was an account exec for FedEx in that area and over half the mortgage companies closed their doors along with any other industries that were affected such as building supplies, landscaping, architecture firms etc etc which in turn affects everyone even up to shipping.

Here in Dallas it's pretty reasonable, you can get a small 1,500 sq foot newish house (built after 2000) for about 175,000 all day long.

What part of DFW is your parents house in? Also where did you buy a house in DFW for 40K?

Arlington.

My folks are in southwest, I'm in central (near UTA)

The one compromise I made, and I regret, is it doesn't have a garage. Mine is a 50's frame house. Very simple structure. It had been a rental for 20 years, so it was pretty buggered up ("A handy man's delight!"). I was young, single, and needed a place to crash, and it was cheaper than the 1 bedroom apartment I had before.

    • Fair enough. You could be right.  Although, Cam Smith, to his credit, admitted it. His quote was something to the effect of "LIV Golf ruined my game. I have no drive what so ever to practice." I'm paraphrasing a little, but that was basically what he said.
    • Okay, I gave this a try today.  Just for clarity sake I used a "Spin-the-wheel" picker ap on my phone to choose which order to do the distances. Then I used my Voice Caddie SC4, which I think is pretty good. Lastly, I used carry distance not total distance. I finished 9 over par.  The very first number generated by the ap was 125. Which I hit to 123 and made a birdie. I was like "This is going to be easy." Then I got the 160 which I hit to 171 and went from 1 under to 1 over just like that.  90 yards - par 95 yards - par 100 yards - par 105 yards - bogey 110 yards - par 115 yards - double 120 yards - par 125 yards - birdie 130 yards - par 135 yards - bogey 140 yards - double 145 yards - bogey 150 yards - par 155 yards - birdie 160 yards - double  165 yards - bogey 170 yards - bogey 175 yards - par Overall a fun little game. If you have an SC4 it will let you enter in a distance as a target and record your distance for you. Then once the picker ap tells you you've done all the distances you simply add up your score off the SC4 ap. Easy-peasy.  BTW - It was hotter than a snake's ass in a wagon rut out there today.
    • On Saturday I played a short (~5900yds) but narrow course that has some quirky holes and very mature trees. Shot a 34-34 for a 68 on a par 71 which tied my lowest score relative to par at -3 (all time lowest round is a 67 on a par 70) and set my new record for most birdies in a round with 6.  That included a penalty stroke bogey on a par 5 and another sloppy bogey from 125 in the middle of the fairway. Hit a wedge from 110 to a foot on a par 4 and a knockdown flighted 9 iron from 140 to 2 feet on a par 3 for easy birdies. Add in driving it greenside on a par 4 and a couple tap in birdies on par 5s and it was a good day. Also helps that I made every putt inside 10 feet and only ended up with 27 putts for the round.  This is the SG compared to scratch and that includes losing 1.01 strokes approach on the 1st hole when I sliced a 5 iron into a hazard.
    • Gotcha, yeah it's hard to tell from single aerial pictures what the rough is like. From that picture everything on the right just looks like traditional rough, not necessarily fescue. But that makes sense now.
    • I mean maybe? Or maybe they just aren't playing frequently enough to stay super sharp.  Just because they don't put up good results doesn't mean they aren't trying/practicing.
