Hey guys over the last few rounds i've been hitting my irons a little fat and blocking them out to the right. Its not a massive problem im still hitting the ball well but its just starting to frustrate the hell out of me because the ball is not travelling as far. I no you really need to see my swing but unfortunely i dont have a camera. So any tips would be appreciated. Thanks guys

I've been having that problem as of late too. The only thing thats been helping me is getting my hips through a little faster. When I come down with the club I'm trying to get my hips through at that time. It's been helping on the long chip shots.

Or

Just try choking up more and more till you find a spot were you feel comfortable.

Hope it helps

A video of your swing is required, it could literally be one of a hundred things causing you to hit this shot.

Edit: Just read you don't have a camera.

My advice is to make sure your chest is over the ball at impact, and not hanging back (Try to avoid a reverse C position at impact)

Chances are this won't stop you pushing the ball to the right but it might well help improve your quality of strike.

Anytime I hit fat irons it is from hanging back and decelerating on the way down...i.e. trying to steer the shot aggressively getting through the ball.

Have someone stand behind you and see where the bottom of your arc in your swing ends up, most likely the bottom of the arc is behind the ball. Now your friend needs to be able to see what you are doing to create this.

Sometimes this is caused by inproper weight shift on your back feet, you might see the inside of your back foot lift off the ground. Make sure you have the weight on the inside of the back foot for a stable base.

You can also try making a compact swing by tucking your right elbow against your body during your back swing up to the point your club is parallal to the ground. This will help you make a compact swing and also keep you balance.

good luck and happy golfing.

Yes, I agree

True. Another improper weight shift move that could cause you to hang back is putting to much weight on your right toe during the downswing.

It could be many things causing the problem.
You're flipping your wrists or pronating at impact instead of supinating. (In Ben Hogan terms)
Remember to start the downswing by turning your hips which will keep your body rotating and prevent you from flipping at the ball.

i find i hit fat shots when i don't shift my weight properly on my backswing and downswing. sometimes, if there is too much weight on my front foot on my backswing, i will hit a chunk. then when i fix it and rotate properly around my rear leg with weight going to the inside of my rear foot, then i can make clean impact.

like everyone has been saying, it could be lots of things. but for me, this happens everytime i do what i said above.

Thanks for the help guys. I figured it out, i was not shifting my weight properly and i was a bit too wristy. Once i fixed this little problem on the range i hit the ball 50 times better and thanks to the help i played yesterday and shot a 77 off the stick. Golf's ptobably the best sport ever at the moment lol.

I had that problem earlier in the year. Naturally without seeing your swing it would be hard to diagnose.

_My_ fault was that I was standing too close to the ball for some reason. I just made it a point to scoot back a "half an inch" and it made all the mental difference.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
