I think what he is saying is that, you said you dont understand why people have rusty wedges. And he was just pointing out that they most likley have them because that is how the club was designed.

Sure, but I disagree with the interpretation of "designed to rust," even though I see how it's taken that way.

They're not so much "designed to rust" as they are just designed to be raw wedges with a slightly more attractive finish than "raw." I think "designed to rust" is often read or interpreted as "meant to rust," and that's where I disagree with the interpretation. After all, mine don't rust, and I just keep them dry. Just because they "will" rust doesn't mean you should rust them. As for which wedge to get, it really doesn't matter so long as you like how it looks. Like putters, a wedge with the same loft and bounce will perform fairly similarly, and a lot of it is confidence. The minor differences in spin can often be accounted for and you can get used to 'em.

So if I just keep my wedges dry, they won't rust? And if they do rust, will that makes all the clubs in my bag rust?

My local GolfUSA has OC Vokeys, and I really like the way they set up - although I really don't want to buy something that I have to care for like a child. My GolfUSA doesn't have the chrome vokey's either =[ I guess I'll wait for them to get some in.

So if I just keep my wedges dry, they won't rust?

Pretty much. Keep them in a cool, dry place when you're not playing golf. Wipe 'em off when you're playing golf. Keep 'em cool and dry and they can't rust.

And if they do rust, will that makes all the clubs in my bag rust?

Rust seems to "spread" like it's bacteria in a petri dish. If another club is touching a rust spot, it'll start to rust far more quickly than it should. So yeah, don't let rusty clubs touch other clubs.

although I really don't want to buy something that I have to care for like a child.

I don't do anything with my OC Vokeys. I wipe 'em off after I use them, brush out sand if I used 'em from a bunker, and that's it. Y'know? I don't mean you need to keep a dessicant in your golf bag or something, just wipe 'em dry.

Despite what everyone is saying, the nike sv is a great wedge, but the vokey is also a great wedge. I own both of them, the SV in a 52 degree and the Vokey in the 56, i feel like i have more control with the SV, so the vokey is sitting in my garage while the 3 wood is enjoying my bag. The SV is in my bag, its in Tigers Bag, its in all the nike professional altheletes, which make it the most winningst wedge in golf, seriously. Titleist makes a better ball than they do a wedge. But u need to demo them. The SV is a lighter wedge while the vokey is heavier. Also, check out the new ping wedge, people have been raving about those. Its up to you.

Thanks for the info Iacas. My dad had a gap wedge, 52 degree, he still loves it, but it was the oil can model and it rusted...after seeing that I was going to go with the Chrome ones because of that...but now that I know how to care for them I may go with the Oil Can.

Thanks everyone for your opinion. If it was possible, I'd give you all +rep! :D

To be honest, I'm selling a TON of stuff on eBay. I sold my Nintendo Wii, about 30 Xbox 360 games, to get my new SQ driver, I sold my R7 Draw.

That, and my parents are paying some, mininimal, but some. Oh, and I'm buying all of these wedges, used, in "fine" condition from 3balls.

  • 2 years later...
Personally I have owned both. Had 52 & 60° Vokey spin milled wedges. I loved them. They both hit crisp & had great feel & control. But had back problems that has unfortunately taken me from the game for last 2 years. During this time I thought my golf playing days were over & I sold my Vokeys. Well my back hasn't healed & it never will but it is getting to were I'm going to try & play the game I love most of the time! Again. Well as every avid golfer knows you have to have a nice wedge to play the game. Just a few days ago went into Dicks sporting goods & they had a great deal on the NIKE SV Tour wedges. So I grabbed the 52° 10. I can't compare yet on how they hit. But as far as weight & feel with out hitting the ball I'm very excited to get the oppertunity to play it.

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
