I have been working hard on my long game lately. After playing a couple of rounds of shanks, fat shots and topped shots (including a hilarious driver shot that went at eye level for about 30 yards, then took a sudden 90 degree downturn and hit the water at 100+mph.. not very effective, but funny nonetheless).

So, today at the range I went through my full routine and managed to find a fairly smooth swing. I carried a couple if I7 shots about 150 yards and straight, which for me is quite an achievement. However, I felt the trajectory was very high and I was helping it up in the air. I'd say the ball hit the ground at about a 90 degree angle, so roll was minimal. Moving the ball back resulted in a loss of 15 yards or so.
My swing speed with a driver was measured between 85-90 (possibly a bit higher now), so it seems like I should about max out at 150y with an I7.

So.. I am wondering if I should stay with this swing considering I can reproduce it fairly easily, or if I should work at delofting the club, get a lower trajectory and try to cram out those extra few yards with the risk of messing up what I have now.

If you have a consistent, repeatable, reliable swing, Id stick with that. What good are a few extra yards if you dont keep it in the fairway?

I would agree with TitleistWI, stay with a consistant swing and work on the short game!

normally if your going to be using your 7 iron from 150 yards out im guessing its cuz your trying to stick it on the green as close to the pin as possible. so the more loft you get the better since this will generally reduce the distance the ball rolls after it hits the ground, and of course that means your less likely to watch your ball roll right over the green and into the rough behind it.

so to answer your question, no dont try to deloft the club for a few extra yards, stay with what you know you can do and build the rest of your game around that. just simply switch clubs if your further out.

sounds like a perfect 7 iron to me.

I was also at 150 yards with 7 iron but now I get 165 yards by using my body to swing the club instead of arms. Dramatic increase in clubhead speed because I am on plane and generate more lag. Unfortunately that same strategy has not yet translated to more distance with my woods especially driver.

Perhaps I am imagining things and my trajectory is normal. I am not drawing the ball, so my path will be higher than someone who has a draw. I'll keep an eye on it next time I am out there.

@tm22721
I am working on my weight shift and added many yards by starting the downswing from the bottom up. I feel my arms are following my torso instead of the other way around. And, just like you, I cannot reproduce this with my driver yet. I seem to go over the top and therefore finish awkwardly low.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
