I went to the range at lunch, and my new hybrid club is my tee shot club now officially. Its a great club and I smash the ball, if I'm 170+ out I hit it again and either get just over or park it on the green. Just amazing.

So I break out the big stick and open my stance to let the slice work a bit. So I opened maybe 6" to my left. Sure enough it still was a hook, but started left and my hook brought it back to the center. I quickly aborted this plan so that I don't get comfortable with the wrong strike.

So onto my question. Why can I hit the draw hybrid dead straight but slice the driver. I will say that the driver is stiff shaft and my hybrid is regular. My 3W is a regular flex and I slice that pretty badly as well.

Does this make sense to anyone???

Simply because a hybrid is an easier club to hit? I use to have similar problems and thats what I chalked it up to. A driver is also a longer shaft. The longer the shaft the more it magnifies any faults in your swing, thats why each iron going down to a wedge becomes easier to hit consistently. I'd keep working, maybe take a lesson or two and learn to use the woods off the tee. A hybrid can work, but on long holes it becomes a pain. Best of luck to you.

I would say that you just have a bit on an alignment issue with your woods.

Try taking your address, then hold the club parallel to the ground pointing straight out infront of you. Where is the ball in relation to your feet and where are your shoulders pointing your upper body in relation to the placement of the ball.

With your club pointing out in front of you make sure your shoulders, hips and feet are all aiming at the same spot. Then also make sure the ball is forward in your stance.

I had the same problem as you and sometime I still do. I think that the my shoulders are square and the ball in forward in my stance but when I do the check with the shaft of the club I see that my shoulders are too closed and the ball is too far back in my stance. Once I square everything up all my shots have been right on as of late.

Makes complete since. Your hybrid is easier to hit due to it being of a higher loft and shorter shaft than your Driver/3-wood.

I place the ball off my left heal (I'm a righty), and make sure to pay special attention to not dip my shoulder. I will say that after a round of golf lately my lower back is sore. I wonder if I'm bending over too far and making my swing for of a shoulder and arms thing and not rotating the hips enough to come through the ball.

I dont really slice any clubs - only my driver if i hit it too hard and let it go away. Bought some lead tape and taped it on my driver to close the clubface faster - works like a charm and takes the right side really out of play

Can you elaborate on the tape a bit more? What is its purpose, and where did you get it?

2 out of 5 of my tee shots slice horribly.

Would the lead tape be legal??? If so, I'd gladly give that a try. :p

For the simple reason that the 9 degree loft of your driver doesn't impart nearly as much backspin as the 22 or whatever degree loft of your hybrid, thus leaving more room for sidespin, which causes the ball to hook/slice.

It's the same reason why a 5 iron will hook/slice more than a 9 iron, despite striking the ball with an identical swing.

leadtape is legal and can be used in competition, you cannot adjust the tape during a round.

good pro shops have it and it works a treat - dont buy a driver with moveable weights buy lead tape, you are not limited in where you move them and how much you use.

Posted
If you place the lead tape on the heel of the club, this will allow you to close the club face quicker because there is more mass on the inside for your swing arch.

Be warned that lead tape or any use of weights to alter ball flight has it's limits and if you have a huge slice there isn't enought lead tape in the world that can "correct" that boomerang.

You may also want to consider a heavier shaft, you may not be able to swing it as fast but the heavier shaft should make your shots easier to control.

Posted
I won't be trying the lead tape, as to me its cheating. Whether its legal or not is another thing, but a man and a club should be all that is needed to hit the ball well. My swing isn't the best, so I'm sure thats where the issue is.

I'm coming into outting season so I'm gonna sneak in a couple lessons with a pro I worked with when I first got in the game. He sorted me out on the irons, lets see how he is off the tee.

well ur hybrid is brobley weighted or set for a draw so thats why
but with the driver all u have to do is get the club square at impact and then turn ur hands over a little after u hit hit the ball also u should set two clubs u on the range one in line to the target and on down ur feet line. like ------------- they should be parallel to each other and just swing the club --------------
along the line of the outside club ur swing path sould be inside to out i didnt explain it well but i hpe it helps

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
