Does anyone do this, adding a wedge or an iron to your bag? I am having thoughts of building a forgiving 3-iron and having it bent to a 2-iron loft(Just like Padraig)? I have a 21* hybrid which I love, but need something that is forgiving and keeps the ball down when it is windy out. If this is right, I would play the hybrids when it is soft on the course and play irons when it is firm playing conditions. It seems something that can be tinkered with and would be a good experiment.

i am going to buy both a 5 wood and 19 or 18º hybrid and switch those in and out depending on the course i'm playing.

Perhaps getting wedges with different bounces on them would be a good idea...going with the less bounce wedges on harder course conditions.

Would you still use the 2-iron, along with the 5 wood and hybrid you are going to buy? How has using a 2-iron benefited your game?

well, my 2 iron is pretty much a hybrid club that looks like an iron. it really hasn't done much to my game but that's because it's not properly fitted for me...none of my clubs aside from putter are fitted for me.

i think that if the club was to my personal specs, yes, it could have some value but where i'm at in my game, it really doesn't add anything drastic.

I've been debating it, with choosing 2 of 3 from {20 degree "traditional" hybrid, 21 degree FLI HI, 60 degree wedge}. I have yet to purchase the 60 degree wedge, though.

In short, as my distance increases, I'm less and less thinking that I'll need more long clubs for longer courses. Six months ago, I was even considering having a good number of long clubs to choose from. Now I'm looking more at wedges. But yes, equipment tinkering is an awesome thing. Changing your bag setup by conditions is a common practice, with a wide variety of abilities. I used to do it, with my old set, choosing oddly from {4H, 4I, 4th wedge}. Phil Mickelson has been known to do it for some tournaments - sometimes 2 drivers, sometimes no driver. Sometimes 5 wedges. Some players drop their 3,4,5 irons for a strong 5 and weak 3, allowing room for an extra club somewhere else. So yes, other people do this - adding various clubs to their bags. And equipment tinkering is a lot of the fun in the pre-round preparation for golf.

my swing coach saw me at the range the other day and he saw I still had my hybrid in my bag which has been in and out of my bag the last year. he gave me a new 7wood to hit in its place. showed me that it had better flight pattern and a better club to swing and had better percentages on shots... you know he was right, I have dropped my hybrid and that 7 is awsome. I love the way it just floats up there and I can work it better than the hybrid, so yeah switching to something new sometimes is a great help. as for changing for a course, no way. every club I have in my bag cover a distance and taking one out would shift the balance of my shots. the only way I could see this is if I were playing a par3 and didn't need my driver, and woods...

If they are forecasting 30 mph winds, I will rotate the hybrids out and put my 1 and 2-irons back in the bag.
