One more argument against more clubs is that in general you need to practice with just about every club to gain some proficiency with it. Assuming you have a fixed amount of time to practice, having fewer clubs allows you to practice more with each club.

I had 13 clubs for the majority of this summer's (my 1st playing on courses) rounds. After thinking back on all my rounds, and a couple testing sessions with the prospective club, I decided to order a hybrid 4 (23°) for my bag. For me, it will help on some longer par 3's as well as certain 2nd shots.

shoot, i'm at the point right now, where i'm debating what club to pull b/c i can't have 15 clubs....i'm in need of a gap wedge. going from 90 - 115 from SW - pw is way too much...and i'm not comfortable with a 3/4 pw to stick 105.
14 clubs is a GREAT limit.

I've just cut my clubs down to 10 ( see below ) and I'm playing my best golf of the season recently. Part of it is eliminating options so that I don't try and force shots that I'm not going to hit well, such as 200+ yard approach shots. I decided that if I can't hit a club pretty well 50% or more of the time, then why is it in the bag during game day!

^I couldn't agree more, playing a shot your uncomfortable with is usually recipe for disaster haha. I have been trying to swallow my pride lately and lay up instead of going for some tougher, lower percentage shots, and I have been cutting strokes quite readily lately! I'll work up to getting to the point where I feel comfortable "going for it".

I don't think you need all 14...I only have 13 right now myself, though I want to get a hybrid at some point. Sometimes, on a short course or executive, I take a couple more clubs out to make my bag easier to carry around!

I carry my bag and when I am feeling a little tired I will take my 5 iron out of my bag. My friend only carries 10 clubs in his bag and he's a 3 handicap.

No, you don't need 14. I'd suggest it though.

For the last two weeks (and currently), I've been playing with 13. Mostly because I could add a 5 wood, 3 iron or a 60 or 64 degree wedge.

1. My long game is set with two hybrids when I haven't been using my 3 wood anyway and
2. I've been chipping beautifully with my 56* sand wedge.

So the jury is still out - just go until you find a club that will help you lower your score.

I have 14, but usually only play about 10 in my bag during a round. I can't remember the last time I used a fairway wood. My 2 and 3 hybrids seem to carry the same distance and they are easier to hit.

When I started off, I had 3 clubs; 6 Iron; Sand Wedge; Putter.
As I got better I increased by adding Woods: 3W; 5W.
I then bought a full set to have: Driver; 3W; 5W; Hybrid 4; Irons 5,6,7,8,9,PW; Wedges 52, 56, 60, Putter.

I just went from 13 to 14 by adding a 3 wood. I didn't really need the 3-wood seeing that I started hitting the 3-hybrid longer but on windy days the 3-wood can be used instead of my driver which gets fairly high. I can't imagine playing without all my clubs. I for the most part use every club at least once during a round. Almost everywhere I play has a 190-200 par 3 that I use my 3 iron on but that is probably the most least used club. Although I use it only once a round if I make that green which I usually do off the tee, its all worth it for me.

This thread enticed me to actually count how many times I used each club.
Here's the results: par 70. 6600 yards.
score - 82
Driver - 13
3 Wood - 2
2 Hybrid - 3
3 iron - 1
4 iron - 0
5 iron - 2
6 iron - 2
7 iron - 4
8 - 6
9 - 2
pw - 4
sw - 11
lob - 2
putter - 30
Conclusion
Although I used all but 1 club in the bag I could used the 4 iron instead of the 5 on a hole where I was punching out of the rough and under trees from 185 out. I could've been daring to go for the green and hit a low punch 4....but I opted for the 5 iron. The 3 iron I used 197 straight away in the rough to stick it 5 feet from the pin.
I kept the driver in the bag electing 3 wood once. the other 3 wood was used on a 235 par 3.
They hybrid was used on longer par 4's where I was 200 out up hill
my avg drive left me with in between a 7 and 8 iron out.
my most used club aside from putter and driver was sand wedge for over-all versatility chipping & pitching onto the green.

furthermore - i'd spend money on a good: putter, driver, sand wedge.
If i were to cut clubs I'd probably drop the 2 hybrid and grip down on a 3 wood to range from 205 - 230
I'd get rid of the 4 iron and choke down on a 3 iron. the lob wedge was used the least of all my wedges..and used those for 1 sand shot & 1 flop shot when I was appx 15' below the hole with little green to work with.

and in analyzing the round. I missed too many damn putts!
