Was out for a few shots on the course last week and noticed that after 20 mins of shots that i was starting to hit them sweeter and further and more accurate without any noticable increase in effort. Hell, my 8 iron was carrying over 150 yrds, and leaving such craters on the green I had to stop as was taking too long to repair.
I asked myself what was I doing different and then it occured to me that I seemed to be making a bigger shoulder turn as I got more loosened up and seemed to be getting my left shoulder well behind the ball on the back swing. So making a consicious effort to do this last evening I was back in the groove again from my first shot onwards.
So assuming this full turn was/is indeed the source of my new found power/accuracy/consistency what is it about this full turn that produces this vast improvement in shot making?

The obvious answer is that you are getting more power from a full turn, that helps the distance.

As for the accuracy and better ball striking, I will guess that your turn is helping you to keep from trying to do it all with your arms, which results in coming off a nice swing plane. A bigger turn is probably helping you keep your left arm (if your a righty) straight.

The big shoulder turn gives you more time to accelerate through the ball. With a smaller turn, you do not get as much time in the downswing to accelerate. This is the torque factor that everyone is talking about. The turn of the shoulder creates torque in your body, and the more torque in the back swing is more that you have to uncoil when starting the downswing creating more whip in the club and creating club head speed. And everyone know more club head speed is distance.

The full shoulder turn indicates that you are using your larger core muscles more in proportion to your smaller arm muscles which can (but is not guaranteed to) result in a simpler, more repeatable, more powerful swing.

Definately using more bigger muscles, with much more power behind your swing. I've just recently adapted my shoulder power into my swing cuz im adjusting to my new and improved swing.

    • Day 24 9-7 Worked on lower body movement with full swing. Focused on hips. Need to work on setup a bit. Was hoping to get to the short game area today, stayed home and recorded some swings instead. I've come to the conclusion I learn the most with my practice setup at home, just a net and a hitting strip. Overall happy with the progress this week.
    • Day 2 (September 7), still with the grip and the medicine ball (using weights).   Still on vacation and really aching to be able to do a full practice the way I'd be able to at home.  Also bought a 1/2" section of pipe today at the hardware store and have been regularly practicing the grip with that too while watching Sunday football with the family.
    • Day 1: Worked on feels for wedge swings. Primarily getting everything to move from the top of the backswing in the correct sequence.
    • Day 6 (7 Sep 25) - Afternoon pitch session with the 54 and 58 in the backyard. Keys: Alignment - Setup - Smooth swing thru - working on each to be as “automatic” as possible - not mindless, but deliberately repeatable. I have found the precision required to properly execute carries well into the full swings.
    • 180% is the threshold. But yeah, many of them are close to 200%. Not 120 and 123%. People generate speed differently. I think your speed will come more easily when this stuff gets sorted out. Stay disciplined. Stay on the road. You can't get off exit 74 before you hit exit 32.
