What contributes more to the spin of a wedge? Is it the loft or the grooves? What if the grooves are worn out - what happens to the capability of the wedge?

I am pretty sure that it is the groves. That is why no one uses a wedge or iron with no groves and a lot of drivers come without them (at least not on the sweet spot). Obviously, the ball has a lot to do with this as well. Also, a worn wedge will not spin as well as a new one. Or, if a wedge is wet, it will not spin as well. Anything that comes between the face of the club and the ball will affect the spin rate (i.e. grass, sand, water) The ball should catch on the groves and this imparts the spin. This is why a tour player will change wedges often.

The ball flight of a worn wedge could possibly be lower too, since the spin rate is lower. Just a logical geuss

It will tend to be higher, actually. Same reason range balls (harder, surlyn balls) tend to go higher too. They grip the face less and slide up the clubface more.

Exactly right! I was about to post the same thing. Less chance of ballooning though due to the reduced spin rate.

It is all in the grooves.

I used a no name 64* wedge and could not spin a ball, switch to a 64* callaway forged X vintage with mack daddy grooves... holy cow what a difference!

Note- I back up my vokey SM 60 used with a prov1 about 4 feet with a full shot.

Its all in the swing. You could give a 25 capper my setup and it wouldnt do a whole lot. If your not making a descening blow on the ball, and keeping a firm letft wrist, your not gonna get anyspin.

Also, sharp grooves that dig into the ball help, same with spinny balls (ala pro v1, tour i etc)will boost spin ratios also.

It is all in the grooves.

Exact same experience here, so maybe it is in the grooves.

It's a total combination of things.

1. Conditions - Wind behind you and hard conditions, it's pretty tough to get spin on anything.

2. Swing speed - the faster you swing, and hit down on the ball, your spin rate is obviously going to go up.

3. Equipment - using the cleveland zip grooves and a prov1 will also increase the spin, as well as the grooves not being worn, obviously.

While yes, these all contribute to some degree, there is one factor that everyone is leaving out... SOLID CONTACT. I don't care if you use old macgregor clubs or the newest vokey wedges... I'll bet you $$ I can still back up a 20+ yr. old wedge JUST as good as the new ones.
