Considering changing out my iron shafts.....could use some advice.

The shafts are the original Rifle Constant weight stiff shafts that came on them from Callaway. My clubs +1.5".

They are the most accurate irons I've ever had....I line up on a target and they go where aimed. They are the 6th set of irons that I can remember owning.....and by far the most accurate.

My reason for wanting to possibly change out shafts is to get a bit higher trajectory. I don't want something too whippy that I'm gonna hang out high left everytime.....but a bit higher ball fight and repsonsive tip would be really nice.

It's time for me to get new grips anyway....thinking that this would be the ideal time to experiment.

I'm not very educated in what options are out there.

Would you leave the shafts alone in the wedges or change them out as well?

What would you anticipate the approximate cost being to do this (3-9 iron)?

I've thought of having just one club done at first....like my 7 iron. Then I could really test it vs the others and see how I like it.

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

If you have to reshaft a set of irons to get what you want, then you have the wrong set of irons. I wouldn't reshaft them. The x14s are great clubs, and you will be happy with the resale value. But if you reshaft them, you'll just be eating that cost. If you must, try just one iron first. But do it with the single iron you know the best and hit on a most consitant trajectory, so you can truely compare. And keep the old shaft.

before changing shafts that are working try lead tape on the bottom flange of the iron head. bottom weighting the head should give you a bit higher trajectory. it will increase the swing weight and will effect the flex of the shaft.

you might try another golf ball with a dimple pattern that might give you a higher trajectory.

Why not try graphite? It will be easy to get an active tip, low kick point graphite shaft which will get you the desired higher ball flight. Another benefit of the graphite is the extra length you need in the shafts wont change the swingweight as much as steel will. Im experimenting with my shafts at the moment more or less for the same reason, just for the hell of it. I bought a set of original RAC LT's with stiff stock TM low torque graphite shafts +1". Ive been using stiff DG +1/2" in my TA3's since 2000 and have no reason to change but since getting a graphite hybrid started to wonder about graphite in my irons. I find the ball flight with the LT's much higher, probably in part to the lower CG in the LT's but Im looking at adjusting the shafts (probably tipping and shortening?? not really sure what I need to do) to try and lower the flight a bit. Half the fun of golf is experimenting and trying new things, mind you though Im not changing my TA3's ("if it aint broke dont fix it").

I haven't considered graphite.

My second set of irons were the S2H2 Callaways with the firm flex graphite shafts.....this was in or about 1996 or so. I just couldn't deal with the inconsistency of the ball flight with them.

I know that today's graphite shafts are light years ahead of those.

I'm thinking that the TT DG HL may be more my speed.....or maybe one of the lighter flexes in the Rifle line.

I'm going to stop by a shop tommorrow or Wednesday and inquire about options, fit and suggestions.

I don't have a clue about the expense of doing this, though. It's time for new grips and they'll basically do them for no charge if I by the grips through them.....just figured now would be a good time to experiment on the shafts, too.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
