Can anyone here recommend some stretches or exercises for me to do to loosen me up before i go out and play a round?

Dynamic stretches for hips. Search "dynamic hip mobility stretches" on google to find some.

Some good ones:
-leg swings, front and side to side
-split squats
-lateral squats

Also, for your shoulders and shoulder blades, I recommend shoulder dislocations. Search "shoulder dislocation stretch" on google.

Don't warm up with static stretches, these will cause injury. Static stretches improve your range of motion, but they do not teach your body how to stabilize in these positions. Dynamic stretches do. Repeated use of dynamic stretches may increase your swing speed as well.

And please do not ever bend down to touch your toes, or do any of those prone cobra stretches. If you want a healthy back, stop stretching it.

So, to sum it up:

-you may want to warm up but it's not necessary.
-do a set of shoulder dislocations with a broomstick or rope or something
-do a couple dynamic hip/hamstring stretches
-never stretch your spine/back. This means don't round it or hyper extend it; also, don't over rotate it.
-focus on quality of stretches, not quantity.

its nice to see someone properly advocating dynamic stretching.

Ah... I can always tell who the 'good' people are on the golf course when I see them streching before a tee shot

Things I Am Good at in Golf

- Hitting it in the drink
- Finding the rough with my drive
- Staying in the bunker- Hitting grassburners all the way to the hole- Three putting- Posting over par on 18 in only 9 holes- Swinging and missing with an iron

Never hit a ball on the range before you do some kind of dynamic (movement) warm up. You are setting yourself up for failure before you get to the first tee. How often do you see an athlete skip a warm up and expect to perform? Never.

Try some very slow toe touches, but don't push it on the first couple. Do maybe 3-5 of them going a little further each time.

Do some rotational movements holding the club out in front of your parallel to the ground. 5 per side without too much hip movement, just core and upper body.

Give that a try!

Actually...check out my little golf warm up I put on Youtube. I just tried to insert the direct URL but it wouldn't take. Type in Golf Warm Up and my videos are the first 2 that pull up.

There's nothing better than rubbing one out before a round. Gets you all nice n relaxed and in a good mood...

I have better rounds when I DON'T stretch before rounds though. Obviously I'm a freak of nature so don't take my advice, but I found that I tend to over-rotate so not stretching keeps me from doing that.

thanks for the replies. I did some shoulder dislocation stretches and some other streches i found online before i played 9 yesterday. I shot one of my lowest on 9 in a long time. Coulda been in my head but my swing was more fluid and even tempo'd

stretching doesnt directly make you a better golfer. it prepares your body to exert itself as well as aiding in the prevention of injury.

One stretch I learned at the Harvey Penick Academy was swinging the driver side to side like a baseball bat slowly and gradually taking it lower and lower to eventually a normal golf swing.

    • Day 65 - 2024-12-04 Helped @NatalieB with her stuff on the force plates, then hit some balls working on the left wrist stuff. Picking up the club.
    • Day 216 (4 Dec 24) - Dink and roll Weds - working on the green side short game covering 5-10 yd chips to low running pitches to about 50 yds (I have accommodating neighbors).  Focused on keeping stance more narrow, eye target about 2” in front of the ball AND not looking up until I see the ball leave.  This drill has really enhanced my confidence in making more consistent ball strikes.
    • As a supporter of the European team even though I chose to live in the US, this is kind of good news. I'm pretty close to Bethpage, but won't be going at these prices. Neither will the crazy drunk NY sports fans who would have made this a very difficult place to play as a Euro. The tickets will go to the city types who are entertaining clients and don't care about the money. Many of them are going to sit there and watch, not get all raucous. I am not dumb enough to believe that this is going to be like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for the Euros, but I think it will be significantly more subdued as a result of the prices. Even at $250 I would probably have been watching on the TV anyway so no real skin in the game.
    • First, it is on free TV. NBC is free to anyone with an antenna, and is on almost any TV in the U.S. with a minimal amount of effort. Charging "a bargain price" would be incredibly dumb. They charged $750 and the event sold out almost immediately. You could better argue they should have charged MORE, not less. What happens if you charge less: ticket scalpers buy up even more of the tickets because they see value: if tickets were $250, they'd clearly have sold for $1k or more on the secondary market. That's tremendous value. Fans would end up paying the same or more, or just not being able to go. Sure, a few who happened to be online at the precise moment on a fast connection and didn't fumble with their credit cards might have gotten tickets for $250, but the secondary market and ticket brokers would have scooped up the vast majority with automated processes and bots and scripts, then re-sold them later on. This way, fans get to purchase the tickets, and the PGA is earning that revenue, not the secondary ticket brokers. Econ 101. Supply and Demand. Nope.
