So thursday i actually didnt even intended to play but i struck the ball well and putting/chipping/pitching all went well so i grabbed a buddy and we put some money down. I shot one par on the first nine and shot a 10 on a par 5 - had to tee off 4 balls til i got a ball on the fairway - overall i shot 92 - i just couldnt freaking belive it. After paying up, i went out again - the first 9 were average again, but the second nine were much better - shooting 82 - playing under my hcp actually, which i hadnt done now for about 2 weeks.

I didnt really changed much - just didnt used driver to keep me out of trouble - but i knew if i would just keep playing i would get a better result - which happens quite frequently - normally the first 9 holes are a complete disaster - bogeygolf at its finest - and then it gets better the longer i play (only if i go with cart obv. since i´m dead if i walk 36 on our course).

So somehow i seem to be unable to get into a "scoring mood" off the first tee and not after the 27th tee. Thats something i actually expierenced quite often so far - and it cant be physical since i prepare properly every time - it has to be mental.

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

think positive always, regardless of shot outcome. this will reprogram your mind attitude and translate to manifested better shots as time goes on.

Maybe you're putting too much importance on the first couple of holes? Convince yourself that they count no more or less than the last couple of holes. I don't buy into the BS about that first drive setting the tone for the round. 18 holes is a long day.

Most people will disagree with this statement, but.....There is no such thing as momentum on the golf course, good or bad. I heard that sometime ago and it has helped me out of many 2 or 3 hole slumps. I try to play like Reteif Goosen. If you look at his face you would never know if he just made eagle or double boggie.

Try just ploding along the next round and focus intenently on the shot. Once the ball comes to rest, accept the result and move on. Don't get hung up on the mental part of the game. If you want to mentally grind on something, focus on course strategy always. Good Luck!

    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
    • Day 552, May 7, 2024 Played nine holes with @NatalieB with irons only from her tees. Didn't really finish out any holes, just hit the irons and approaches and some chips.
