I'm not gonna lie, this shit happens to me. And it always seems to happen at a crucial moment in the round. and there is no bigger killer of confidence than a low, almost sideways, worm burner. it only happens with my degree wedges and once I unleash the beast I can't tame it. It becomes mental after the first one. What's happening? Once I lose confidence in that club I keep having to cut off a pitching wedge and then distance control becomes an issue.

I used to have the same thing, which almost made me quit for the year. If you use alot of wrist in your shots, take that out for now, focus on hitting with all your shoulders and arms, keeping your eye on the ball, and finishing through.

I used to have a slow backswing, and then zip right through the forward swing and I would do this. I just cut back to the basics, and started over again.

I know what you mean, as soon as i brought a wedge out I thought "uh oh.." that didn't help either.

Check your aligment. When this happens to me, it's because I've opened up my front side a little to much. The result is that my back side is a little too close to the ball and is preventing me from coming through, properly. The result is an outside-to-inside swingpath and making contact with the hosel, first.

You may be standing too close to the ball at address. Thats an occasional occurrence in my swing, though for me it just results in all my shots being struck on the heel (with the odd shank... yes, I said the s word).

Try and feel a nice bit of space between the butt of the club and your thighs. If this is indeed the problem.

That's what happens when I do it, also I end up coming over the top when I do get too close. I started fwd pressing more on some of my wedges and it's helped me. My wedge game is my jewel, and every once in a while (mostly early in a round) is when it happens to me. I find getting loose at the range helps me big time.. if there's no range I start chipping early by hitting balls in my yard.

I had this only on my 60* and 64* wedge for a few weeks. The worse thing was it was either a beatuiful high trajectory spinner dead nuts at the flag, or exit stage left off the hosel. I found that addressing the ball, shuffling my feet back a few inches helped as well as choking up .5-1 full inch on the clubs.

Never hit 1 with the 56 or any other cub except the 60 and 64. Took a few weeks of hardcore practice but it is solved.

I really hope you can get rid of it as there was nothing more frustrating than hitting 1 dead nuts within a few feet and then hitting another that felt like I should have been ashamed to even think of playing golf ever again.

This was happening to me on the range this morning, and the problem was dumb. I wasn't getting my hips through the ball. For some reason I thought I could just kind of rotate them a little bit and expect to hit a good shot. I started concentrating on fully clearing my hips and every wedge shot was a good one. Try this out and see if it was the problem.

thanks fellas. it usually happens to me when my buddy and I are all square at about the 15th or 16th hole and I just continue to shit my pants after. Hopefully some of this will stick in my mind come Monday.

It's all mental. When I do this I am so anxious to see where the shot goes that I come up out of my stance causing all sorts off swing problems. I wouldn't try to fix the swing problems, they are the symptoms. Fix the cause, the anxiety. Consciencously stay in the shot and keep firing down and under. And try not to grind over your setup on these clubs. Just get up and hit it rather than setting yourself up for failure. It's like pulling an old ball out on a water hole.

This is it, for me, right here. Not clearing hips + also bringing club back wayy under plane = disaster for me.

Sometimes your setup is fine and you just don't execute the shot. IMO this is an easy thing to do with wedges. Here is a short checklist of things to do:

  • Nail down your balance. Even a slight wobble here will send your clubhead forward a half inch or so.
  • Nail down your tempo too. Same thing. If you rush the swing there's no telling where the clubhead will end up.
  • Until you get it figured out, line the ball up towards the toe of your club. Better to hit it weakly than sideways.
  • Figure out a way to be confident, even if you don't deserve it. The lack of confidence is probably the biggest contributor to the problem! Your faults are probably minor; don't fear them.

    • Day 65 - 2024-12-04 Helped @NatalieB with her stuff on the force plates, then hit some balls working on the left wrist stuff. Picking up the club.
    • Day 216 (4 Dec 24) - Dink and roll Weds - working on the green side short game covering 5-10 yd chips to low running pitches to about 50 yds (I have accommodating neighbors).  Focused on keeping stance more narrow, eye target about 2” in front of the ball AND not looking up until I see the ball leave.  This drill has really enhanced my confidence in making more consistent ball strikes.
    • As a supporter of the European team even though I chose to live in the US, this is kind of good news. I'm pretty close to Bethpage, but won't be going at these prices. Neither will the crazy drunk NY sports fans who would have made this a very difficult place to play as a Euro. The tickets will go to the city types who are entertaining clients and don't care about the money. Many of them are going to sit there and watch, not get all raucous. I am not dumb enough to believe that this is going to be like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for the Euros, but I think it will be significantly more subdued as a result of the prices. Even at $250 I would probably have been watching on the TV anyway so no real skin in the game.
    • First, it is on free TV. NBC is free to anyone with an antenna, and is on almost any TV in the U.S. with a minimal amount of effort. Charging "a bargain price" would be incredibly dumb. They charged $750 and the event sold out almost immediately. You could better argue they should have charged MORE, not less. What happens if you charge less: ticket scalpers buy up even more of the tickets because they see value: if tickets were $250, they'd clearly have sold for $1k or more on the secondary market. That's tremendous value. Fans would end up paying the same or more, or just not being able to go. Sure, a few who happened to be online at the precise moment on a fast connection and didn't fumble with their credit cards might have gotten tickets for $250, but the secondary market and ticket brokers would have scooped up the vast majority with automated processes and bots and scripts, then re-sold them later on. This way, fans get to purchase the tickets, and the PGA is earning that revenue, not the secondary ticket brokers. Econ 101. Supply and Demand. Nope.
