thanks for all the tips! I saw 'chipping blues' and I just had to read this. I have been chipping terribly lately...yikes.

Try and do a backandforth motion underhanded with your right hand (assuming you are righty) to mimick how hard you will want to swing to get the ball to where you want it. It's like an imaginary underhanded toss to the green. Mimick that backswing, while still accelerating through the ball to get desired distance.

Friend taught me that and it's helped my game immensley.

My biggest thought on chipping right now is RELAX. Relaxed grip, relaxed swing. Keep your wrists out of it, but don't keep them ridged. Let the club do the work. And make a bit longer and slower swing. The club sort of drops into the back of the ball.

Practice all the time. Chipping is one of those things that you can actually practice in your house. I live in iowa and I can't golf for months. I get so obsessed that I practice chip shots for two hours a day off carpet, hardwood everything during the winter. It becomes its own skill outside of golf at some point.

I got so bored I practiced one hops into my kids toys, backspinning the hell out of the ball, high trajectory with/without spin. My chipping was so good at the beginning of the season and my putting so bad that I was actually more likely to chip in from on or off the green then I am putting from the same distance.

What are you doing right now? Stop and chip balls for an hour.

    • Rory!!  What a great round.
    • Oh great, now that the door opened last year, he thinks he owns the place and waltz in for another jacket anytime he wants. Kids these days. Such entitlement. 😜
    • I agree; that would be great.  The record is 20 under;  if we only include Masters Tournaments contested in April, then the record is 18 under.  Seeing Rory beat 20 under would be fantastic.
    • Now I am hoping Rory breaks the all time scoring record, especially with how difficult the course is playing right now.
    • A few thoughts on the past few minutes. I agree that fairways are overrated, but Rory might want to reconsider that view in the short term. For the second time today, Bryson is hitting two shots in a row from the same greenside bunker.   Xander had a similar issue on 12 earlier today, although I think that only happened to him once today.  My mother and I are sitting in my living room commiserating.    Poor Patrick Reed, only bogey of the day on #18.  Shane Lowry had a clean scorecard with 15 pars and 3 birdies.
