Which wedges do I need

Looking to expand my bag and get a wedge or two. Probably just start with one for now. I do have a pitching wedge already, so I don't need another one.

Would 56 degree be the best value for me for now until I can get another or two? And if so, who makes the best or best valued?

i would have to say Cleveland CG12's or Titleist vokey spin milled.

but unless your making good contact you will get the same amount of spin if you use a cheese greater to be honest.

its all about personal preference go to your local pro ask if you can try a few and pick your favorite. but i would recommend getting the same brand for your wedges as they are all different.

also get the right 'bounce' on the wedges... if your a 'digger' ie. you take a big divot get a club with a high bounce. if your a slider ie. you have a small narrow divot get a club with a low bounce.

I have the same question. I have a 45 degree PW and a 50 degree gap wedge that came with my AP1 set. What wedges should I start with?

If you can only afford 1 wedge right now, I think Id go with a 56*. Its a good middle of the road option between a 52* and a 60*.
Personally, Id go with a Mizuno MP-T. Its as good as any wedge and they retail for $100, which is considerably cheaper than a Vokey.

From a 50-deg GW, if you can only get 1 additional wedge, I'd go for the 56-deg SW with 10 to 12-deg of bounce (Vokey, Cleveland CG14 or Mizuno MP T).

The issue with the 56-deg is when you want a LW, you are forced to go to 60-deg to keep a 4-deg gap between your wedges.

If you want to go to 2 wedges immediately, you can opt for a 54-deg and a 58-deg or keep with the 56-deg and 60-deg. But you won't go far wrong with either option.

You are not forced to do anything. Although, if you want consistent gaps starting from a 50* you would not want to get a 56*, it would be 50*, 55*, 60*.

I have a PW (not sure of the degree) and a 56* wedge, I'd really like to get a 60* to play around with though.

In my opinion, the 56* is pretty versitile

Rugger, if you find your PW degree and it's around 46-47, another option is for a 52/58 set up. You still have the lob for the 58 and a 52 to close the gap between 47ish and 58. But if you can only get one, get a 56*.. it's easiest to build around.

If you only can add 1, then i would highly recommend 56*. There are quite a few good ones on the market. Questions to ask yourself first. On the courses you play most often is the sand firm or fluffy? Are the fairways cut tight or is there some grass around them? All of these answers will determine the bounce that will serve you best. Most manufacturers offer a 56 with different bounce, and if you can get one that matches up with the conditions that you typically play you will be more happier in the long run. Good Luck.

If you only add one wedge, add a mid to high bounce(10-16*) 56*. You can go ahead and be "bonding" with it as you will use this club a lot. Most clubs can be bent 2* - even cast clubs. You can bend a 56* into a 50,54,58 or 50,55,60 or 46,52,58 or 48,52,56,60 setup.

I'd highly recommend any Vokey wedge, but I also like the feel of my Callaway X-Forged 64*. If you are into Callaway I'd at least give them a look as well. You should buy your wedges new, more so than any other club. Fresh grooves are a premium in a wedge, and by going used you loose a lot of that.

I am also considering a Vokey wedge and hoped for some opinions. I have a set of Nicklaus clubs and mostly opt for my sand wedge for close chips and pitches. What degree would be best for working around the greens and allowing the ball to check? I know the swing goes hand in hand, but looking for general info. And also what kind of bounce would one consider for hot, dry , and hard conditions( South TX). Thanks

I would suggest buying a 56* and a 60*. I use Cleveland wedges and like them a lot. From what I hear vokeys are the best, but not the best for your wallet. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I used to carry 4 wedges and found that 90% of the time I was using the 56* wedge. So I went down to 3 wedges, pw at 48*, gw at 52* and lw at at 60*. I'm ready to kick the 52* out and replace it with the 56*. IMO the 56* wedge is one of the most versitle lofts in the bag. Also, all of my wedges are Edilon and the v-sole isn't hype, it works great.
