hey everyone. im going to try to get some new irons next week and i wanted some feedback on the clubs ive considered and maybe some ideas for ones i havent.

im a 13 handicap with a 15year old set of pings, so im looking for a midsize club, i like the thinner top lines and a reliable brand.

ive considered the ping i10, taylormade tour burner, taylormade r7 tp irons, and titeist ap1's and ap2's.

anyone try these?

The i10's are great clubs, very forgiving and give such a nice feel when hit. The look of them is just great as well, a nice dull grey finish tops it off.

I play the i10's they feel so sweet when you hit them right.

They have a much smaller face then the g10's, but still help a bit on mis-hits You really can't go wrong with ping irons. They last forever and just plain work.

Just look at your clubs, they are 15 years old and they are still breathing. Proof is in the pudding.

I know my dads 20 year old Ping Eye 2's still work great, so you really can't go wrong with Ping irons. Mizuno and Titleist both get great reviews, but I have used neither. I'd suggest demoing some clubs at your local store, and then price search from there. Good luck!

if you are a 7 and have enjoyed the ping s58, you should consider forged irons. you are obviously good enough for these and that 7 is going to drop lower.

MP-57's or MP-67's. Fantastic forged clubs and I'm glad I got them.

what about the ping s57's that come out in september? are they a tradition blade? would they be too advanced for a 13 handicap? i really like the look of them from the pictures ive seen.

i was a 13 when i purchased the i10's ive dropped 2.1 points in about 5 weeks.

The ping blades are about the same size as the i10's, but without the slight cavity back you see in the i10's, they are a bunch harder to hit. You can still work the i10's a bit, and they have the appearance of a players iron with a thin topline and a small face.

My approach has always buy to match your game. Blades are for for players sub 7 IMO. The i10's are slight game improvement irons that are meant to help you get to the player style irons. I'd say your a tweener and going from eye2's to a blade would be a tough transition.

thanks ping_guy you have been very helpful. im really leaning towards picking up the ping i10s to demo day and maybe get next week. how do you like your ping wedges? im going to get 3-pw irons and then maybe get a 54 and 60 degree wedge (possibly ping)

ok when you get fitted, if the guy is good, hes gonna tell you how important it is to get your wedges the same measurements. I'm a +2 degree with a stiff shaft and +1/2" length with a gold grip. Basically I'm a big boy with a fast swing who tended to pull the ball left.

I wanted to get the tileist wedges so badly, but the fitter told me that the shorter the club, the more important it is that you have the right fitting. So maybe i don't get as much response as a vokey, but there are two huge advantages to getting the wedges to match my fit and set.

1. Continuity. They feel the same and since they are fit to my standards, I feel like im hitting a familiar club and don't pull the ball left.

2. Ease of ordering. Once you get fitted, Ping gives you a fitting serial # from there, all you have to do is call ping, or your pro shop, give them your serial number and for 87.50 ($40 less than a vokey) you get your wedges fitted to your specs.

I tried to post before but it didnt work for some reason...

Anyway, I LOVE my Taylormade R7 Draw's. They were 2007's golf digest's Gold choice for game improvement clubs and are resonably priced...

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
    • Day 2, 12/31/25.  Similar to yesterday (rainy, no surprise), I hit primarily 6-iron full swings with the same focus;  I also hit some chips (about 1/8 swing) with the 54.  About two dozen full swings and an equal number of short shots.  All of this was indoors, off a mat, into a net, real balls.
