First Impressions of courses

Can/does your first impression of a course ruin your feel for the course? I played a course over the weekend that I have wanted to play for a long time. I just never found the time to play it and with the expense $68 for 18 plus cart never wanted to play it that bad. Well my cousin's work had their golf outing at this course and he asked me to play. I played for a little cheaper. It was $50 with lunch and a cart. I showed up at 10:00 for the shotgun start that ended up being tee times. Well I pull into the lot and it's a very beat up lot. The course is maybe 10 years old if that. I changed my shoes, and headed to the clubhouse to meet up with the rest of the guys I was playing with. The clubhouse is a trailer. So far I am very unimpressed with this course that is not only "expensive" to me but supposed to be a very nice course. The course was in pretty good shape. Most of the grass was dead but there's not a whole lot you can do in Ohio when there's no rain.

So does your first impression of a course ruin your day? I don't know that I will play this course again because I was very unimpressed with it.

Does it ruin my feel for a course? No

Would I ever play there again for $68? HELL NO! Be glad you got a discount and a meal and learned to never go there again.

It usually takes me all 18 holes to get a first impression of a course. So, no it doesn't ruin my round(my golf swing usually does that for me ). If after the round I don't like the course I don't go back.

First impressions are huge for me. New courses that don't have a lot of growth really turn me off. I played a newer course a few weeks ago with very few trees....not many hazards...etc. It seemed like I was playing in an open field. The greens were also very very slow. Not impressed.

No doubt, there can be off-course elements that can give a bad first impression, but for me, golf is all about the golf course. I really don't care about the parking lot or the clubhouse or the restaurant or any of that. So first impressions based on any of the periphery don't mean a whole lot to me. The golf course is the field of play and the challenge of the game. That said, I like to play at least one 18-hole round before formulating an opinion of the course. Conditioning is important, but the design of the course is paramount to my enjoyment. Marginal conditioning can be overlooked when the course has top notch architecture. By the same token, pristine conditioning cannot make up for a boring, lifeless design.

yes if its butt ass ugly and terribly taken care of i would rather stay home but since most of the courses local to me are either omg nice or wow it looks like my back yard, no in between. so instead i only go to my private country club that i love going to

      Day 37, June 10.  Today was primarily WFH, so I had several practice sessions (indoors, off a mat, into the net).  At least one each of U, 9, and 6-iron full swings with the usual priority.   I also tried a few times a putting type stroke with my 4H, as something I should probably learn how to hit (and what it does), but the mechanical shot at home off a mat doesn't tell me much of what it's doing.  That's something I should probably try on a real green, not during a round until I've tried it.

      Day 10 (10 Jun 26) - Played in the midweek shootout at my home course - on aerated and sanded greens - day of trying to figure tempo to get the best roll on the greens.  Approach game was decently solid as was shots off the tee.

      Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.

      Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.

      Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
