Just curious to see how often people practice and for how long? And how often do you play?

I play about 4 times a month, hit balls about 6 times a month for 30 minutes per session, and practice short game/putting about 6 times a month for 30 minutes per session.

p.s. - my goal for this general survey is to find out how much more I need to practice to improve my handicap

I've played 44 rounds since beginning of April -> 9 rounds per month. I only go to the range during the winter and a bit into the spring. My average score is down about 15 strokes during that time (restarted playing last year after 30 year absence).

I play every Saturday. If I can I go to the range once or twice a month. I have been playing for 1 1/2 years.

I have 3 weeks without playing I feel I'm going to die.

I try to practice at least one hour every day taking a day off every week, and do golf specific exercises daily as well. If I may add, how much is less important than how you practice. Repetive hitting will not necessarily help reduce the handicap.

Ps: this is my first post here and the Welcome section won't allow me to post a new thread, so howdy all. I live along the northern Gulf coast and am keeping a sharp eye on Gustav and Hanna right now. I look forward to participating in this forum (if I don't get blown away), and I hope you'll forgive this bit of threadjacking Burnsuptoniic.

I agree with the general principle that how you practice is more important than how much. Perhaps that will be another thread.

No worris on the "threadjacking." Good luck with the hurricane. I live in an area that had to be evacuted because of Fay and lived in South Florida during the '04 hurricane mess. Not fun.

I rarely have time to play given my schedule, but I practice around 1x to 3x a week generally. I try to treat each practice ball as if it were a stroke during a round, whether it's a full swing or a half swing. (I used to treat them too much like M&M;'s).

I Play 3 days out of the week. Practice 4 days. Each practice day is an 8 hour event. 2 hours at the range, which is about 3 buckets. Dedicated to warm-up, and then whatever the drills are for that day. Recently it's the shoulder turn, and swing plane with the Driver. 3 Hours Chipping, sand play, 50 yrd shots, putting. The other 3 are spent putting heat on the practice drills. (9 of 10 20 yrd shots inside 6 feet) and other games.

Practice is much more productive, and much more interesting with a friend, or competitor. It's a great way practice, while putting the heat on yourself to be better than your buddy.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
