I just learned that you can make your own clubs by assembling them from commerically available components. The supplies needed seem to be basic; vice, pliers, hacksaw, etc. It looks like you can save money this way.

Anyone tried it?

I am going to try and put new shafts in my clubs and refinish them. I will then send them off to get the loft/lie checked

Don't forget a shaft vise clamp, tubing cutter and a graphite hacksaw blade.

It's not that hard. If you can measure and cut shafts consistently, you are pretty much there. READ AND FOLLOW THE TRIMMING INSTRUCTIONS for the shafts. Make it easier on yourself by using round grips. Those reminder ridges are a bitch to line up. I've built about half a dozen sets of irons. It's a nice winter diversion.

Am I missing something here?

Excluding the putter, I thought all grips had to be round.

I started making my own clubs about a year ago. I have stuck with fairway woods and hybrids. I really enjoy being able to tinker with my clubs and not spend much money on it. My best club build is probably my 7w, which is a Distance Master Pro Steel head on a graphite shaft that I pulled from an old Tommy Armour 845 driver. It's not that it is the prettiest club, it just rocks the hardest.

They have to be "symmetrical" in cross-section.

A reminder ridge running along the bottom is common and legal.

Does about $50 a club sound right? ($30 clubhead, $8 grip, $15 graphite shaft)? Golfsmith.com says that the components are made in the same factories as the major brands like Calloway, etc.

Depends on what kind of club. $50 sounds about right for a beginner driver project. For FWs and hybrids I don't think I've paid more than $15 for a head. I've gotten mine from Golfworks and Hireko.

Oh, and I've been very happy with the quality of the components I've gotten. greg

You are opening Pandora's box here. If it sounds easy and simple, then why isn't everyone building their own clubs?

I stared building clubs 20 years ago. Back in the days of "wooden" woods, I have whipped hosels and reset inserts. ( every hear of hitting it on the screws )
Refinishing was a lot of work then, just use a sandblaster now.

Maltby's book, a club scale, a grip template, ruler, club vise, A+B epoxy, acetone, tape for grips, grip solvent and someone to call when you get jammed up are needed before your start.

Just double checked this, the wording is definately "circular in cross section", but a ridge is allowed.

I never realised this. Don't think it's for me though.
