Hi all,

Just needed some advice regarding which wedge degrees to get. I have a 47 degree PW and so I'm in between having a 52/58 setup or a 54/60 set up.

If I were to use 52/58, the 58 would be my sandwedge, with 12 or so degrees bounce. The only problem I can see with this is it may be hard to open up off tighter lies for more lofted shots.

54/60 removes this problem because I would use the 54 as the sand wedge and the 60 as a lob wedge, with low bounce.

Which do you use/prefer/think is a better option?

Thanks,
James

Hi Jimmy, exactly the same dilemma here for me as I'm considering a couple of Vokeys.

However, Ive just played a match against a 1 H/Capper (lost3 &2) and he had the 54/10 & 60/4 Vokey Spin Milled, and said he thought it was best set-up in his opinion.

After seeing him stop his ball 2/3 feet from the pin on at least 6/7 times from around the green, I think I'll be ordering mine pretty dam soon too.
If only we could buy practise time too eh ?

I am also in the same boat as you two. I think the 54/60 combo will work out best. I have been researching all of the combos and am coming to the conclusion that this is probably the way to go.

Go the 54/60 route. It's nice to have a close-in club you can use from tight lies. The 54 is versatile enough to get you out of sandy situations.

I was in the same situation a week ago, 47 pw.

Went with 54.10 and 58.08 spin milled. Couldn't be happier.

Went with the 58 instead of the 60 because I feel it is far more versatile, and I can hit a lot more shots with the 58.

It´s not all about the bounce, or short game shots you can shape, it´s about covering the distance on well-controlled finesse wedge shots

I´ve got the following setup :

PW 46º : 90 meters, 80 half swing
SW 54º : 70 meters, 60 half swing
LW 58º : 50 meters, 40 half swing

So I have 10 meters (10.1 yards) between clubs. If I go with another setup, I have gaps. Of course this fits me , and pros can hit 120 yards with his LW and go with PW 50º-SW 56º-LW 60º....

I learned this in the hard way and after in Stan Utley´s short game book (remember he was a true PGA tour player with several wins, not merely a theorical guru)

He uses 47º-53º-58º, using his 58º for virtually each short game shot, and explain how Ernie Els go 48º-55º-60º because being so tall and strong.

So, first fill your distance gaps, then choose a main club to master your short game, and finally add the properly bounce keeping in mind the courses you play

    • Terry - what a story…I’m about 12 yrs your junior but I do have friends in similar places of life. Like others have said - “go for it”.  The fact that you’re willing to challenge yourself in the midst of dealing with something like Parkinson’s is hero level stuff….looking forward to seeing how this great adventure plays out and make sure to get some of it on video as well.  Make them memories dude!
    • Played nine today. Just went out trying to make a swing that had the feels of what I am working on. I would give it a C- at best. The best swing came on the 9th hole, 220 yard par 3, downwind. I finally made a swing where I felt the pause, and the arms down stuff like I practice. I hit the 4 iron about 215 yards, it rolled just off the back of the green about 20-Ft from the pin.  I might play 10 yards shorter on every iron shot, and make that pause swing, cause I can still hit it about 90-95% the distance.  Distance wedges or 3/4 wedges are going to different. Shanked two of them today trying the pause, arms down stuff. Might spend a bit of time looking at the video on those shots specifically.
    • Day 350: good practice session today. Hit about 25 balls, working slowly on my priority piece. It looks decent in slow motion. Better at full speed but not quite there. Then putted for about an hour. Focused on putts inside 10’ but also did a stack putting session.
    • Two of my golfing Buddie's are left handed. I will play a couple of rounds and use their clubs and see how I do.  Played last Thursday and had the worst game ever. (Playing in really strong winds. (SW @ 20 to 30 mph with > gusts.)  Will let everyone know when I get back out. May not play until Monday.   Thanks everyone, for your encouragement.    Terry
