ok, today during a game, there was a bit of a ruling question after an incident. a player in our four had a ball in the bunker, right up front and right under the lip. awful lie, felt sorry for him. anyways, he makes his swing, ball comes straight up and hits the brim of his cap, and lands maybe two feet in front of him. ugly, yes, but out of the beach.

now, the ball never hit his body, only clothing(hat),if that makes any difference. did any kind of penalty occur?

none of us were sure, so he just carried on, but we'd like to know the official ruling. thanks.

My guess without looking at a rule book is that it is a two-stroke penalty and you replay the shot.

My reasoning is that if you hit your caddy (or, i suppose your golf bag or cart, i.e. equipment) and incur the above penalty, then hitting yourself (even if it's your cap, which would maybe be considered equipment?) would incur the same penalty.

Just my guess. Maybe the shot wouldn't have to be replayed, but I think the penalty strokes would be correct.

Rule 19. Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped

19-2. By Player, Partner, Caddie or Equipment
If a player's ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by himself, his partner or either of their caddies or equipment, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke. The ball must be played as it lies, except when it comes to rest in or on the player's, his partner's or either of their caddies' clothes or equipment, in which case the ball must through the green or in a hazard be dropped, or on the putting green be placed, as near as possible to the spot directly under the place where the ball came to rest in or on the article, but not nearer the hole.

DEFINITIONS
Equipment
"Equipment" is anything used, worn or carried by the player or anything carried for the player by his partner or either of their caddies, except any ball he has played at the hole being played and any small object, such as a coin or a tee, when used to mark the position of a ball or the extent of an area in which a ball is to be dropped. Equipment includes a golf cart, whether or not motorized.

Penalty for Breach of Rule:
Match play - Loss of hole; Stroke play - Two strokes.

Well there you go, thanks Chingali.

Was it ever a two stroke penalty?

Well that makes me feel good I knew at least part of the rule from when I used to play (I took a 5 year break before this summer, so that rule was still in effect the last time I played! Woohoo!).

I need a new rule book, the one I carry is 2002!

i ignore stupid rules (and laws) and a penalty if the ball hits you is stupid

Wow it must be nice having the luxury of deciding which rules you have to abide by and which are "stupid". Do you, yourself make that determination or is there a book that someone puts out called the real rules of golf and the stupid rules? I myself just play by all the rules as I must not be intelligent enough to differentiate.

On another note how do you determine your 10 handicap? Is that using just the smart rules?

You must be a great guy to play golf with. Why is that a stupid rule?

Name another "stupid" rule. I'll bet that each of the rules which you call "stupid" are ones that mean your scores are increased and that people inconveniently call you a cheat if you don't agree with that rule. My guess is that when you're not smoking pot as your avatar proudly implies, you boast of scores that you wouldn't be within 30 of because of dumb things like the rules of golf. If there's one thing worse than a cheat it's an arrogant one. I'll bet you don't ignore "stupid" rules when they are there to give you assistance. Handicap of 10 my ar$e. You don't have a handicap, so why say that you do?

wow... you guys are pretty harsh. I play by the rules, but to each their own, so long as they are having fun. My wife doesn't follow all the rules, and she likely doesn't know all of them. She does however have better etiquette than most people and is fun to play with. Maybe anyone who doesn't aollow all the rules should put an asterick* next to their handicap if they so choose to proclaim one.

No if you don't follow the rules you cannot have a handicap. You cannot have a score without following the rules, you cannot have a handicap without having scores. Its actually pretty simple.

as i do not look to the gwbush to protect my inalienable rights guaranteed in the constitution, i do not look to the usga to preserve the sanctity of the game of golf, i do it myself

So if we get a liberal president you will play by the rules? Seems to make sense? It must be nice living in your world. Where you can blame the president for everything including your golf game.

    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.
