Yeah, the bragging about clubs is just that, bragging. Having said that, I really enjoy carrying the clubs I do and discussing the virtues of club design and playability. In short, its something I enjoy about the game.

When I was living in Alaska everyone wanted to know what kind of fly rod I was using, how long the tippet was, did I tie my own flies, floating or sinking line... the whole gammut. That is another point of enjoyment and I'd hate to see that taken away from the game because some can't handle it. There is a whole subculture in golf that does nothing but talk about equipment and the latest innovation and I believe that it is good for the game.

Is golfing status conferred by the weapons we carry instead of the way we use them or our love for the game?

No, but they're the paintbrushes with which we use to craft our works of art, if you will, even if most of the canvases end up getting thrown in the trash.

But finally, does any of this really matter as long as we have fun? So what if we are gear-mad philistines?

I think in any sport the real enthusiasts embrace every aspect, from what courses we play, how well we shoot, and what equipment we use. Swing theory, mental game, it's all interesting to most of us.

Clubs just happen to be something we can list in our signatures.
