I pretty much only use my 3 wood off the tee and outdrive most of the people i play with who tee off with a driver. Probably hit 70% of the fairways yesterday with others still long but just in the rough, no problems there.

Now the irons, how many greens did i hit? None! I absolutely got no feeling for irons. Swinging the 3wood just feels wonderful, but irons feel horrible. I will probably make contact with part of the hosel on the iron a couple of times per round.

Im guessing my swing is too flat which is suited to woods but not for irons.

Anything i could try to get my iron swing more up? thanks

If you are a 12.5 handicap you gotta be hitting some irons. Do you take a divot? What are your divots like?

Some random thoughts/considerations/things to think about regarding this.

1) Can you hit your fairway woods off the deck as well as off the tee?

2) Can you not hit irons off a tee as well as not hitting them well off the fairway?

3) This might well be a fitting issue. If you are a long hitter then shaft flex is important (assuming a late release). More likely would be a lie issue with the irons. It isn't as important with the lower lofted clubs. Swignweight/MOI could also be an issue in this space.

4) A set of clubs with mostly hybrids might work better for you

5) What is your predominant iron error? Is direction more an issue than clean contact with the ball, etc?

6) What is it about your driver that seems not to work?

7) How many fairway woods do you carry and can you hit them all well from the fairway and off a tee?

8) What sign were you born under and do you part your hair on the left or on the right..... OK, skip that one

yes i hit the irons they just spray all around the green or come up short, then im good with wedges and putting so often salvage a par.

As for divots i dont take one very often. Sometimes i hit iron off the fairway and you wont even be able to tell where the ball was lol (and i make solid contact not topped or anything). But yeah more of a longer shallow divot pointing left, right or straight.

1. i can hit the wood off the deck as good as off a tee but not as often as its harder (probably a practise thing as only on the par 5 which is 3 times a round i need to hit off the deck)

2. irons off the tee are probably the same as off the fairway. 5. I dont top or chunk them but will hook or slice or hosel them. 6. I dont like the driver, just feels like the head is too big getting too much air resistance through the swing. My body and arms tend to be quick and the big driver head seems to fall behind causing a big slice or pop-up. 7. only got a 15 degree 3 wood. hit both well had more practise off tee so better off the tee than fairway.

Although you don't need to take monster divots like some of the pros a divot of some kind should be evident when you high mid and high irons. Even a very shallow divot should be seen with the low irons. My guess is that you are picking the ball off the turf and delofting the club a bit in the process. Here is a recent thread where we discussed "Hitting Down on the Ball". It may help you out. http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17515

Practice with your wedge with shots of 50 - 70 yards with a slow tempo full swing and you will develop your iron game. Once you learn to hit this shot solid consistently it will improve your irons games including your long irons.

So if I understand this correctly, there is only ONE SINGLE club in your bag that you can hit well with a full swing. I would go to a club-fitter (if there are any in your area) and find out what it is about that single club. dave

    • Sorry, I will disagree. You got a penalty because you hit it somewhere and didn't want to play it from there. Bunkers are not the general area. If you had hit it into temporary water in the general area, you'd be entitled to relief. You hit it into a hazard, a bunker. Why should you get free relief when you hit it into a bunker? If someone else hit it into a different part of the bunker, without water, they'd not get a drop for free out of the bunker. Heck, it'd cost them two strokes if they didn't have an ACC and wanted to drop it out of the bunker.
    • I love golf, but we have some really dumb rules. Like this one, you get a penalty stroke because it rained.
    • No. If there was a place no closer to the hole that afforded some relief, you could have dropped there. If you were truly as far away from the hole as you could, in the "back" of the bunker, then… your options were basically to play it as it lies (lied? lay?) or take the penalty stroke and drop behind the bunker (keeping the point where the ball was between your drop and the hole).
