hey guys, im about a 9 handicap, which i think is good for my age (15) but i have been encountering problems in recent weeks with my swing. i am using a neutral grip, and my swing plane can turn flat at times, but i will hook one really bad once in a while, its annoying because my irons used to be consistant and my strength. I am using regular flex 90g t-step iron shafts, on my taylormade r7's. I hit my 6 iron about 165-170 usually and i have a regular grip size, my hands arn't huge, ANY THOUGHTS? could it be time for me to switch to stiff flex? or is their a tip that would help me?

Thanks alot!

We all know a hook is caused by having the club face closed too much. Since you said it's once in a while, I'm gonna take a guess and say its that you're turning over your hands half a second too quick. I had the same problem and focused on that part of my swing and it eventually went away.

i'd say it's definately a swing issue and not equipment because your said it only only happens once in a while and not all the time. without video it will be hard to accurately diagnose.

is their any specific tip or drill that you used?

Could this be caused by starting the downswing with the wrists, and not the torso?

It's hard to give an exact answer because I don't know what your swing looks like. It could be a million different things that's causing this dreadful hook.

What I did was do the handshake drill. Grip the club like you normally would and separate them, like you're holding a hockey stick. Practice swinging like that and get the feeling of turning your right hand over your left (if you're a righty). By the end of the swing, it should be like you're about to shake hands with your target.

I believe this aspect of the swing is timing. So it's more about feel/timing and how fast your downswing is to perfect this. Everyone is going to have a hook once in awhile. It just happens.

I am always playing a anti-hook shot in all my clubs from driver to wedges and this is what I do to prevent the hooks.

Driver, I slightly open the club face at address and take the club slightly outside the line and vary this outside the line depending on what kind of shot I need to play. When I played today I hit 13 of 14 fairways.

Irons, I take the club outside the line with every shot.

A hook is generally a better player's mistake. I find that bad hooks are when the player's hands slow down through the impact area (usually a confidence issue) and the club face closes very quickly as you make contact creating a left to left flight.

Definitely not an equipment issue.

    • Good progress. I am finally feeling like I am settling my weight into my right foot earlier in the backswing. Right hip sinks back, right leg feels staying flexed. Feeling very stable and firm in the right leg. I feel like I could do a good squat with that right leg. Very balanced.
    • oops, forgot Pebble Beach and Spyglass.  And two more of the original Open rota, Prestwick and Musselburgh (with hickory shafted rentals).  And Muirfield.  And maybe a few more, I'll check my list when I get home.
    • Day 189 2-20 Really focused on rotating the forearms today with wrist arched. Did some single arm swings as well.
    • In March of 1978 I got to play Pebble Beach GC. Played it from the back tees, since I knew I'd probably never play it again. Oops, shot 102.  Three weeks later, I played Torrey Pines - South, again from the back tees (maybe 6,700 yds in those days). Shot an 87, and missed a birdie putt on the lakeside No. 18 green. In 2021, I played TPC Deere Run in the Quad Cities area. This is site of the John Deere Classic. It was early October and the course was undergoing renovation, so I got to play the front nine twice for $110, lunch included. The course was great and the driving range was unbelievable. Hint: you need to pay attention to the wind drafts before you try to challenge the cross bunkers! BTW, Deere Run is a public course. Norwood Hills Country Club is site of the Champions tour event, the Ascension Charity Classic, now the Stifel Charity Classic. This classic layout has 36 holes. This summer I hope to play the West course where the Champions event is held; Missouri Golf Association is sponsoring an amateur event there.  I have played the shorter East course three times - it's quirky but quite fun. Also: Circa 2000 I played il Picciolo, a course at the base of Mount Etna in Sicily. The volcano was spewing ash that week. The course frequently hosts European pro events. Lots of elevation change and gently rippling fairways. Left a 7i shot 10 yards short of green on one par 5. Turns out the hole had a 12-foot high alpine flagstick, and I was not as close to the green as I thought I was (bad perspective).
    • Just the Plantation course at Kapalua. Not like I didn't know it, but it was a visceral reminder of how ridiculously good the tour pros are. That course is f***ing *hard* playing it from ~6500 yards. From the tips!? Then if there's wind?!
