I'm in Michigan and have really taken golf seriously this year. I'd like to try and play a couple of local tournaments next year for the experience, and I've been making great progress over the last six months.

I'm going to get out probably two or three more times at the most. Then its snow and ice for four months. What does everyone do to keep sharp and to keep your muscles working and stretched.

yep, i'm conditioning right now with tiger 09 as a matter of fact.

i do a lot of stretching just for overall health but you could pick up some that are golf specific

i work out my core muscles and back muscles a lot since this is where power is transferred from the hips, legs, arms, and shoulders to the club

think about what muscles get sore if you havent played in a while then go out and walk 18, try to keep those muscles up to par

**remember to work on the rotator cuff (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis) as there are numerous sports related injuries from lack of support in the rotator cuff

knees are also a common point of injury since there is so much torque being placed on them

or you can take the john daly approach and say that if you wanted to have to work out you would play football

Try going to the Titleist Performance Institute website; they have a ton of great golf specific drill you can do. Most can be done with a Swiss ball, some tubing, or some free weights.

Awesome site. Thanks.

I bench a few days a week, and work out on "Perfect Pushups". I started doing some core training too. I would suggest focusing on core muscles and legs. (for stamina) Running wouldn't hurt

go to my health club, and lift. specifically focusing on the arms, shoulders, core and back (above the waist). for below the waist, i sometimes go for runs, and play basketball. Im on my hs tennis team as well as golf, so the tennis keeps me in good shape during the spring, so playing tournaments on the weekends is not a problem.

being fit is very important, why do you think tiger is so good besides his mental strength? Also do you think camillo would have won multiple times on the pga tour if he wasn't ripped...god knows his swing is awful.

Even though it's 65 out right now I'm starting to get back into concentrating on overall fitness for the "winter". I started the p90x program after having been a triathlete for many years and then studying for the bar and starting work and plumping up. It's a great, fairly low impact workout that has already helped with the core and flexibility. If you can grab one cheap, and can commit to about 1hr/day, I'd look into it.

    • So, @klineka and @Zeph are you guys trying to imply that winning majors is difficult?  Perhaps, that's why Rory becomes the first golfer (not named Tiger Woods) in almost 60 years to win a career Grand Slam?
    • Watch his post-round interview @TommyRude. It provides good insight on what he's been struggling with. You look for answers in many places, but it may be as simple as nerves. He gets nervous in those situations and winning at Augusta has been a lifelong dream. It became an even more spectatular dream after winning the other majors and only missing The Masters for the career slam. No matter how hard you look and try to analyze everything, it doesn't have to be more complicated than that.
    • Honestly, I was so confused by their argument. I didn't really respond.   I'm not exactly sure. Start times the first two days were mentioned, and so was course layout, but neither of those made sense to me.
    • He explained it in the post round interview @ 6:12. It's a good interview where he talks about the mental struggle to win at Augusta, how there's been a lot of pent-up emotions since 2011 and that final round probably being one of the toughest days he's ever had on a golf course. I absolutely recommend spending 26 minutes on it. It provides some good insight on him as a player and person. There's been a lot of talk about him not winning majors and The Masters, which has been difficult for him. He's obviously got the game to win, but nerves seems to be a big reason why he's missed out on many of them. Some people seem to expect the best players to have a mind void of nerves and mental challenges when a lot is on the line, but that's simply not how it works. Some deal with it better than others, regardless of talent and skill. Rory seems to be one that struggle to keep nerves in check in those tense situations. This win is a huge monkey off his back and hopefully it will help him deal with those nerves the next time he's in a position to win a big tournament.   That's the kind of person you don't even bother engaging with. No matter what you say and what evidence there is, they'll have an explanation for it.
    • I dont mind people making statements like that, as long as they can back up their conspiracy theories. So what did they do to make it easier for Rory?
