I feel that I have hit a wall with my game due to poor putting. A few days a ago I had a round where I hit fifteen greens in regulation, got up and down twice, yet still shot 5 over. No lost balls, but only one birdie (a two foot putt). That is horrible putting, but I don't know how to fix it. I believe it to be mental, because my stroke doesn't feel bad, but I am always clueless on the speed and skeptical of my alighnment, even if I know how the putt breaks. I know that the only way I will get to a 1 to scratch handicap is to become a much better putter. Anyone know any good drills for speed and alignment that actually show results?

One way I have tried to gauge learning speed is start taking practice strokes while looking at the hole and imagining that I was rolling a golf ball under handed at the hole.

I kept doing the practice strokes until I felt like I had the correct amount of power and then I would immediately stand over the ball, line it up, and putt it.

The trick isn't nailing every putt, the trick is never ever 3 putting and nailing one or two.

Yes, I have tried this technique, and I find that it helps a bit on my very long putts, but even doing this doesn't really help my speed on those common 15-20 footers. Thanks for the tip though.

Have you tried the pelz books or Rotella putting book. The pelz took 2-3 strokes a round for me.

I think the best thing for alignment is the sharpie line on the ball, once you align the putter with it and then your body you can't go wrong.I can't putt without it now,if its not on a ball i'm using on the green i feel lost without it.

I have the rotella book coming in the mail, hopefully it will help. I might try lining my ball, thats not a bad idea. Thanks for the help.

Are you F-ing serious?

elaborate please

Yes the short game bible did take 2-3 strokes off. Usually I would lay up to a 120-150 yardage, after experimenting with his system I modified his 3x4 and now I can consitently expect up and down at worst from 40 out.

I just played using a lined ball and I didn't putt too bad. Shot 37 with 7 GIR, 17 putts, only one three putt. The line definetly helps on the tricky 6-8 footers. I think I will try doing this next season (at least on midrange putts) to see if it works consistently in competition. I appreciate the advice.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
