Hey guys...

I'm forutnate to have one of those great wives who wants to get her husband a new set of irons for his birthday.

I shoot about 100 or 105. I currently play with:

-Big Bertha Driver
-Taylor Made Rescue Dual # 3
-Taylor Made Rescue Dual # 5 (My favorite club...my baby...my hero)
-Taylor made RAC OS Irons 4-sw(I don't normally hit the 4 or 5 iron, I usually hit the rescues instead)

What do you recommend for new irons? I want something very forgiving and HIGH QUALITY set. I'll spend a grand if need be, because i know i'll have these clubs for years.

What you recommend?

(((Let me know other info I can provide. As an aside...I tend to "Skull" balls when i;m really close to the green)))

Thanks in advance.

Congratulations. You are very lucky.

In my opion, you will improve your game more if you take that money and spend it to get your clubs to
fit your swing.
Maybe get 1 or 2 wedges, a putter that you like (have them all fitted to your swing), and few lessons on the short game that will help you around the green and improve your score.

Congratulations. You are very lucky.

Are you referring to my existing clubs?

Also...I plan on buying them in the next month or so, as I will be able to play every day for about 2 week at the end of the year.

Are you referring to my existing clubs?

Yes, I'm referring to your existing clubs if you are on a tight budget.

If you can get new clubs and also have them fitted by a decent clubfitter, that would be awesome.

My budget isn't tight. I'll spend money on something that is good, will help my game and will last a while.

What's a decent amount to look to spend here?

You're going to get recommendations for everything from Adams to Yonex (couldn't think of a Z ;) ). But really the choice is yours alone. Try as many irons as you can, decide which ones you like best and then get them fitted. That's my 2¢.

My budget isn't tight. I'll spend money on something that is good, will help my game and will last a while.

Cost of club will vary depending on what you buy.

A fitting session will cost around $60 to $100 per hour depending on the clubfitter. You will learn a lot about clubs and also your swing from a good clubfitter. You can ask people on the forum to recommand one in your area. A thourough fitting session should include: Length - trying different lengths of clubs and find one you are confortable and efficient with. Lie - hitting ball off a lie board to deteremine the proper lie angle for you club. Flex - measure swing speed and also see how you swing (tempo) Shaft - depending on whether you hit ball high or low and also weight of shaft that suites you whether it's light or heavy. Swing weight - determine which swing sweight you have more chance of hitting club face center. Grip - measure your hand to determine a proper grip size Club head - this will be easy since you want the most forgiving design. Your purchase options would be: 1. Get fit by the clubfitter and clubs from him/her. They usually only carry component brands (like Miura, Wishon, KZG) which you might not heard of, but some of them are also high quality. (You can order only 6-PW or whatever combination you like) 2. Get fit by the clubfitter but order clubs to your spec at retail stores. Name brands are available. (You can also order only 6 to PW) 3. Buy a set of clubs you like any where and take them to the clubfitter for adjustment. (You have to buy 3-PW or 4-SW and wasting money of 3i to 5i) Oh retail stores do have some people "trained" to do fittings but I wouldn't recommand it.

I would say first go to your local Big Box golf store (Golfsmith, Golf Galaxy, etc.) and hit every single club that you can, take the time to narrow it down to 3-5 sets that you like, then take even more time and hit those more (this could take a few weeks). Once when you find out what you want, either buy the set an go to a clubfitter, or go to a clubfitter and order straight from the manufacturer.

I would personally suggest doing the fitting and then order from the manufacturer because you could order the set in 5-PW or 6-PW if you want, since you have hybrids, and don't hit your 3 or 4 iron.

Good luck finding new sticks.

andre, i wouldnt call miura a component brand :P they are pretty high end..haha

however, the irons you have now are great, they are honestly as forgiving as anything out there, so i would go out any buy some new wedges, a putter, then focus on irons, but do get fitted..

Congratulations. You are very lucky.

Andre is right about custom fitting and custom golf clubs. They are the way to more consistency and lower scores. If you decide to go this route go to a custom clubmaker that can fit you properly. Not the "big box" stores. The guys that fit you there are poorly trained for the most part and you want to be fit outside where you can see ball flight. Here are some links to help you in your search for a clubmaker if you choose that route.

Most important get fitted. Im around your level and am looking at the new Mizuno range. The MX 200 look like the sort of clubs Im after but will go to the free Fitting session with an open mind and see what they recomend.I dont no if Mizuno do free fitting in the States but definately worth having a look.
Any decent independant fitter may point you in a different direction, the main thing is that you get the right clubs for you.

When you say "very forgiving" what is your biggest struggle with your current irons? Is there a reason you are looking to replace them, or is it more a matter of wanting something new and different? (nothing wrong with that, of course)

    • @StuM when I called the course a couple of months ago they said you can mention that you want to add an extra night to the hotel when you book the package through them and the people who are in charge of the stay and play can handle it, did you ask them about that?
    • Though start, bad design. For me.. I would tee it up and hit the biggest club face in the bag that don't airmail the green. Also hit a fade that is a lot easier for me to hit up on the air. 180/190.. it should be a high cut with 3 Wood with a tee 1 inch above the turf.
    • I'm on the side of thinking that something is not right here and should be reviewed. Let say that their course rating is pretty low, so their index is higher than it should be. But if they always play at their home course they are probably going to play bad away from home so it should even that advantage out or at least lower it down.  Also you can say that they are amazing players under pressure and very skilled in match play format, but at the end of the day variance and luck is always going to play a big role between 2 players of similar handicap. Let's assume that player A have 75% chance of winning a match over player B that only have 25%, there is no way that a player's skill in match play can make such a difference in a match outcome but I prefer to use a number that is hard to argue. (For me.. 60/40, or 65/35 at most) The odds of winning 21 straight matches with that  generous odds are less than 1% (or 1 in 420). Is this proof that they are "cheating" or something, of course not but is evidence enough to note that something is not right and should be reviewed further.
    • UPDATE.....Please read We still have time to add more golfers to both days, June 1st & June 2nd At this time he have reservations for 20 golfers on each day At this time we have 17 for Saturday at EagleSticks - Room for 3 more At this time we have 16 for Sunday at the Virtures - Room for 4 more Please post ASAP if interested. I need to give a more final count May 17th. They will accommodate a fluke last minute change but lets try to iron this out to they can sell tee-times if we do not need them. It will also be hard to add tee times. COST: If you are golfing both rounds AND staying in the "Stay & Play" hotel the cost is $252 This includes Golf on Saturday & Sunday and Saturday night in the hotel (See below for hotel info.) If you want the "Stay & Play" I need to arrange that. If you ARE NOT staying in the hotel the cost is as follows: Sat. June 1st @ EagleSticks = $80 Sun. June 2nd @ Virtues = $120 You will notice the "Stay & Play" deal is hotel for only $52 extra which is a great deal.  If you want in on that let me know! Saturday tee times are: 10:15, 10:24, 10:33, 10:42 and 10:51 I will try to get those spending Friday Night in the hotel in the early groups to allow others more time to drive in. Sunday tee times are 9:00 9:09, 9:18, 9:27am and 9:36 Saturday after the round we will have an area at EagleSticks to gather for prizes, food & drink.   Sunday after the round is currently un-planned If we can guarantee 16 we can reserve a small room but there would be a hard charge @ $20 per head at the Virtues and we would have a simple buffet Likely we just grab a beer a dog and a table as available. Let me know if you think a more formal plan for Sunday after the round is needed. The "Stay & Play" hotel has changed Double Tree in Newark 50 North 2nd Street Newark, OH 43055 740-322-6455 If you need a hotel for either Friday or Sunday nights you will need to book on your own. I was give an estimate of @ $249 for the Double Tree and do not know if there are better offers elsewhere. I will be arriving Friday, hoping for mid-late afternoon and would love to meet up for dinner with any that are in town. Time & Location TBD Below are the names & have confirmed: Would really love to get more golfers.  Reply if interested.  Time is running down. Below is updated with best information I have.
