If you have the loft of irons and wedges changed does it have to be checked or done again every-so-often? Also, what is the most increase or decrease a club should be bent?

Posted
What you may want to check, depending on how much you play and the surface you hit off of at the range, is the lie.

As for increasing/decreasing loft, the manufacturer tells you how much they can be bent. The most I've seen is 4*. Generally, it is 2*.

All I'm wanting to do is weaken or strengthen some irons and wedges to get a more usable gap between my clubs. Why would I need to have the lie angle checked for that. I'm not sure my swing is where it needs to be for a fitting. I'm working on it and hopefully sometime next year I will be comfortable getting a full fitting. For now I would just like to have the loft adjusted to bring some gaps closer together.

You asked if the loft needed to be checked. The answer, generally, is no. The only thing playing affects the most is the lie angle of the club. (Therefore, my response)

Do you know the yardages where you are suffering distance gaps? Also, which irons do you find you hit the most? Reason being is that you can tweak those particular irons and leave the rest of your set, alone.

FWIW, when I tweaked the lofts of my irons, I did so with the 7-PW. These were the irons I hit the most and I wanted to maximize distance. Are you looking to do the same?

Now I understand.

My problem is an 11* gap between my pw and sw. My pw is only 45*. I've found some wedges that I like and hit very well but they only go down to 52. I'm thinking of having my 7,8, and 9 weakened 2* and having the pw weakened by 1*. This will allow me to get a 52*, 54* and 60* and have the 52* and possibley the 60* strengthened by 2*. This will give me a 4* gap between everything from my 7 up except between my 9 to pw, which will be 5*. Hope all this makes sense.

I could hunt for wedges from othe manufacturers but I won't have the oppertunity to play them on the course like I do these. Plus, I can get these wedges at about a 45% discount. I don't mind taking some of the savings and having it put into haveing some lofts changed if it isn't going to hurt the clubs any.

You may consider checking to see if the manufacturer of your set of irons also makes a gap wedge. I think they are usually 50*, and it will match the rest of your irons.

I am pretty sure that if you adjust the lofts of any club the bounce of that club will also change. So if your PW is 45 degrees with 3 degrees of bounce, and you deloft it to 47 deg, the bounce will change to 1 deg by default. Just something to keep in mind when adjusting lofts. I doubt most people would notice a difference, but depending on how you hit the ball it may be a factor.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I've found a used matching "A" wedge and it is 50* This and couple Bridgestone wedges may be the way to go. I could probably get by with the gaps this would leave and not have any problems.

I am going to talk to the local club builder about the bounce of bent clubs. Changing the bounce of longer clubs might not make much of a difference but I can see how changing it on some, if not most, wedges might not be a good thing. Thanks for bringing this to my attention before I ruined some good clubs.

Actually I think that for every degree you bend it, weak or strong, will in turn change the bounce by 1 degree, so it's a 1:1 ratio, not 2:1 ratio.

usually its 2 in cast clubs and as much as like 8 in forged... check with your club maker... and 907 if you give a wedge more loft you get more bounce...

You are correct. I said that a 45* clubhead changed to 47* will adjust the bounce from 3*

to 1*, not that the bounce will change only 1*.

Don't bend your clubs.

Buy new ones if you want a different lie or loft.

Clubs are made for a certain loft and lie for a reason, it only weakens the metal if you start messing around with them.

Who told you this? Do you know how many players have equipment that is adjusted? Not everyone plays with standard lie and loft equipment. Furthermore, if you look at the OEM's website, most equipment is made so that you can bend them either flat or upright and that you can change the lofts at a total range of 8*. Do you believe that an OEM would make equipment that you could not bend or damage and then say that it's okay to do so?

are you nuts? do you honestly think that I can play standard lies at 6' 5 1/2" my R7 TPs are 3 degrees upright... and I bent them myself... it doesn't weaken the metal... the same with the loft my lofts are 3 degrees upright ... name me a tour pro who plays with off the rack clubs?

Yes, the bounce will change with the loft adjustment, I'd suggest to sell the one you don't need and buy another which will fill in the gap for your swing.
I had monkey around with the loft in the past and half the time it did not come out to be the way I thought it would.

My advice would be not to worry at this stage. Wait until you get to around 10-14 in handicap and then look at your compliment of wedges.
You will learn some good skills making what you have work the way you want them while you have the handicap to take a few risks.
Just my opinion.
