Most of the woods I've seen come in only 3, 5, and 7 wood versions, but I've heard that they are way easier to hit than 3 woods.

Where do I get one?

Have you tried a search on ebay? You can also place a "Want to Buy" ad in the marketplace.

You can also try Morton Golf and go on golfwrx.com. They have a marketplace, too.

If you want a "preowned" 4-wood, lots of them are available

here . Probably lots of other places as well.

Not many companies are making them at the moment. Mizuno is making a 16.5 and Ping is making a 17* with a 43" shaft, which for me kinda defeats the purpose.

If you look at slightly older models they are more common. I went with a 2004 Callaway Big Bertha 5+ wood. It has a 4 wood loft (17*) but a 5 wood shaft - 42" instead of the standard 42.5" of a 4 wood. This thing is the most useful fairway wood I've ever owned. It hits like a 3 wood off the tee and it's right at the max of loft and shaft length I can comfortably hit off the deck. Unless you are looking for a large head fairway wood, I would highly recommend this club. The value is amazing! You could look anywhere for one, but I'd start at Callaway preowned. There are also 4 woods in this same model as well.

Good hunting!

Different models within different companies make 4 woods. The Big Bertha Series from Callaway doesn't come in a 4 wood model, but the FT series does come in a 4 wood (IIRC). But Ping makes 4 woods (G10), Taylormade makes 4 woods (R7), Mizuno makes one (F-60), Cleveland now makes one (new Launcher model), Nike makes a 4 wood (SQ Squared). You just need to look at different companies websites and look at their different model's specs to look if they offer a 4 wood. But many more companies are making 4 woods available. And if you don't want a 43" shaft like stacey said, you can just cut it down to the length that you want, so I personally wouldn't worry about shaft length too much.

As with most clubs, the loft and the name might not match. A fairway wood in the 17 degree range is a 4-wood by most standards, although it might be listed as a 5+ or just 5 (as in, "hit our 5-Wood 10 yards farther than yours.")

All you need to do is go to your local Golf Galaxy or whatever the store is near you and ask if they carry any 4-woods. I know Ping makes a 4-wood. If you are looking for something thats easy to hit but is like a 3-wood try a 15* hybrid. Ping makes one in their g10 series and they are a very solid club.

I carry an old (maybe 7 or 8 years old) Adams Tight Lies 16* wood, which is considered to be a 4 wood by many people. It is the oldest club in my bag and has suited me fine for years.

If you are interested in building your own, Innovex Golf offers a RLS 4 wood as a component. I'm not sure about availability, I saw it at www.myostrichgolf.com .

I don't have any experience with that particular club but have a 3 and 5 with the 455 Carpenter steel face and they do "sound" hot. I'm not sure the ball goes any better but it really makes a sharp cracking sound when hit well.

I consider my 5wood to be a 4 and a half wood really, it's got a strong loft (17.5) - as does my 3 wood (14.5).

I've heard it been recommended to some people that they should have a 4 wood instead of a 3 and a 5 to make room for a wedge (and also, if they hit the driver everywhere and go for few parr 5's in 2 - it makes sense to have a 4-wood, something more forgiving and easier to hit than a 3 metal)

eBay is a good place for slightly older clubs...I have a TaylorMade S200 4-wood which is great (wouldn't be without it; steel head which I prefer in a fairway wood as it's heavier than titanium). Titleist made a nice looking 975F (16.5°) and I assume their current range has a 4-wood equivalent as well.

    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.

    • Well the first advice I would give is to look at your swing. If you are swing out to in, it may be difficult to fix your misses with club adjustments. They would only be a bandaid. I use midsize grips because I have long fingers and I feel I have more control with them. I also have tinkered with shaft length and swing weight. But I know when I miss it’s because my swing was off.
