Welcome! Quite a few of us Alabama folk on here. I used to live in Florence, and later in Russellville, but I'm in central Alabama now.

Sounds good to me. I've got some vacation time coming up in second week of December; all I know at this point is that I'm going to play a lot of golf somewhere in Alabama.

Have any of you played the public course in Florence that took the place of McFarland Park, up near St. Florian? Just wondering how good/not good it is.

yeah its called blackberry trails...

its a decent course but not even half as good as mcfarland park was.... NOT EVEN CLOSE it is flat as a board... and houses pretty much line the fairways and if you hit your ball in their yard you aint playing your second shot there.....but their pro shop is cool.. and they have pretty beverage cart girls. thats all i will give them. whereas mcfarland park had rolling hills and trees and bunkers instead of houses and swimming pools.... i wish they'd open mcfarland back up... but i guess it wasnt pretty enough for the upperclass wannabe golfers....

I hated McFarland--lol. 18 elevated greens were a bit much. There was also a layout issue or two on that course, namely 18 and one other hole where once you were in the fairway, you could see three greens and didn't know which one to hit at. I never played Skypark or whatever they call that one; I did play Spring Creek in Tuscumbia -- what a craphole.

You want hot bevcart girls, go to Frank House Memorial down around Birmingham. I haven't played there in probably 10 years but I still remember the talent. PM me if you guys want to get together next week. If I don't hear from someone by Tuesday, I'm going to go with my plan of playing locally Wednesday-Sunday. Jess

call me crazy but i loved the elevated greens on every hole. and i concur with you about the 18th hole... i did have some trouble trying to figure out which greento hit onto when i first played there and forgot to pick up a scorecard....

skypark is closed and has been turned into a subdivision... but i played there almost everyday when i was in high school... mainly because it was just 7 bucks per 9 holes.. it did suck.. it was just a hack-course but it was still golf... pm has been sent. not sure if we will have time to play together but i'll try to work something out. my birthday is on friday so i may either celebrate it at joe wheeler on sunday or monday... (have to work all week including saturday...) i forgot to include my phone number in my pm.. so when you reply to it include yours and i'll get in touch. i have never played the spring park course, mainly cause its just a 9 hole course and i dont like playing the same holes twice... they are usually log-jammed that way... but its cheap enough for a quick 9 if i have time during the week i guess...

    • does anybody still use a 7 wood? if not what do you use instead>
    • Day (2 May 24) - somehow I missed posting both Tues and Weds practice sessions - so the streak ends and a new one begins…. Focus today was on ball first contact using the Divot Board for reference.   Worked with 7i, 9i and GW hitting hard foam balls.  Started hap hazardly and then settled back into my pre-shot setup.  Much more consistent in the latter.
    • So, Newey is out at Red Bull. Where does he go in a year? Is Max still with RBR in 2026? Hmmmm.
    • August 2010 Woodfin Ridge 18th hole Playing in a large tournament with a slew of friends and the last day was two man best ball. The 18th, when it was bent grass, was very fast due to a steep slope on the right side. I had seen many people over the years putt off the green from above the hole. I hit a great drive and 3W to 30’ left of the hole. With everyone watching my partner hit it way too fast and never high enough and his ball rolled all the way to the bottom of the green.  I hit mine much higher and the ball came to rest about 20” above the hole. Then it slowly started trickling towards the hole for a walkoff eagle! Nobody said anything except my partner who was yelling pretty loudly. I looked at the crowd and told them it was okay to clap because it was a great putt, and they gave me a bunch of polite golf claps and brought me a beer!
