Upgrade, upgrade, upgrade... makes think of the Beyonce commercial!

Here is my problem: Do not get to par 5's in regulation !

Current driver: Hogan CS-3 10.5 Draw stiff which I hit 230 with little roll.
Current 3 wood: Tour Edge Houdini Utility 3 reg which I hit 200-210

Which should I upgrade??? Upgrade will be to a Tour Edge Exotics club.
Choices would be TE CB1, CB2, or XCG(?) Used

I also would consider an TM R7 (used)
but am confused with all the models?

I'm nearly 60 with a good short game and play 100 rounds a year.
I need to pick some some length but where would I gain the most?

Driver :T Edge CB-1 or Cally Mini Driver 14* or GBB 11*

Have you tried hitting your driver off the deck? I have and now reaching the par 5's and long par 4's

I aim slightly left with the club face open and take an outside to in swing, play the ball back a little in your stance and the ball will get up and rolls, your 10.5 degree driver is perfect for this shot.... try it you might like it.

I'm most impressed that you are nearly 60 and know who Beyonce is!

But seriously, when you hit that 230 with the driver and no roll, is it a fairly high trajectory? If so, you might pick up 20 or more yards with a higher kick shaft and/or lower launching head. It might be posible you could keep your same carry distance and add about 20 more yards in roll. And if I read that right you don't get to par 5s??? in regulation??? Or did you mean under regulation (as in reaching in 2)? Because if you can go 230+200 then maybe you are playing some really long par 5s?

If you're trying to buy distance, the most you'll be able to buy is 5 yards or so. I'll suggest you save your money for now and get a lesson from a good instructor. At 60, you're probably losing some flexibility. An instructor can show you a few tricks to help you get around that which should add some distance.

I'm still drooling over the Beyonce performance from that commercial....what a hottie.

Sorry...no useful advice other than the fact that in twenty years I can only hope to be hitting the ball as well as you with both driver and 3wood. I commend you.

That commercial bothers me.

Don't get me wrong, I think Beyonce is hotter than a pistol, but the part where she's dancing and talking "let me up grade you to a ..." - - it just looks like her lip syncing is from a different shot entirely and they superimposed her face from the lip sync take onto her body in the dancing take. Anyone else see this?

"Lemme lemme lemme upgrade you..."

I'd upgrade the driver first, because it typically gets more play than the 3-wood.

yea i agree. you will use your driver on 14 or so holes out of 18, and you will not always use your 3 wood. i would try a burner or maybe a callaway hyper x or nike sumo square. they can help you get the ball further. i would also try a lower loft on the driver...

I agree. If there's a 500 yard par 3, this setup will only leave u about 70 or so yards out. Even a monster 600 yard hole would leave you with 170 which is do-able with a good iron shot.

I had that same driver and had the same issue with it; as have many others. Plenty straight, but no roll. I would change the driver because you are hitting the 3-wood long enough. Good luck.

Have you always hit a stiff driver? 230 yards seems a little short considering how far your 3-wood goes.

I certainly can see the logic in replacing my driver...
It is used far more than my current 3 wood utilty.
Truth is I hit the Hogan CS-3 so straight I hate to chance a switch.
So I think I'm going to shop for a true 3 wood...
A pickup of even ten yards would be helpful.

Some posts noted my distance is long enough to get home in regulation.
The problem is I'm giving you straight distance...
My home course has doglegs and water which alters the distances.
I would love to bomb drive 220 over a hazard at 200...
but I score better if I lay up to 175... effectively losing 50 yards.
Same thing happens on approach to green...
I'm short 15 yards to avoid the traps.

As for the take lessons suggestion...
At nearly 60 I really do not need another twentysomething telling me to get more shoulder turn...
Besides upstate NY is exactly the home of the best teaching pros.
Most lessons consist of "Let me watch your swing" then "Work on your short game to score better".

Id probably get a new 3 wood depending on how far your course is because you could end up using it off the tee sometimes. Or if you like your 3-wood get a new driver or vise versa.

why upgrade, I have a friend that I always outdrive by 30 yards and he never makes par 5s on two, but from the blues last week he shot even par and he always beats me when we play match play.

Why should you try to get more distance when a sharp short game and shots from 150 yards can give you birdie opportunities.

If you still need more distance, the Taylor Made Burner models offer lighter and longer shaft to provide more distance.

Have you tried one of the extreme distance balls, a Freak or something. Maybe that would net you more distance than a club change, and for cheaper

OK, we're nearly the same age, and our distances are very similar. Are you playing 600+ par fives, or do you mean that you don't reach them in two, three being regulation?

If you're playing from the proper tees, then the shortest par five should give you a reasonable chance at getting home in two (under favorable conditions), and the others should be played tactically as three-shotters. Tiger is Tiger because he can do stuff that we can't. Otherwise, he's just Eldrick.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
