Ive been playing for a about a year and have been steadily getting better but am still inconsistant (this october i shot an 81 one day and a 99 the next).

My problem is that I hit everything way too high. My driver goes 230-250 on a well hit ball (95 ish mph) but is really high. My 3 iron is about 180-190 but has the trajectory of a normal person's 7 iron. This is all annoying but not a big problem.

My wedges are the big problem. My LW goes 30 or 40 yards but like a mile high, my sw goes 50 or 60 and a mile high and my gw is like 75 yards or so, my pw is like 80 or 90 and my 9 iron is like 100. After that my distances go up 8-130 7-145 5-155 4-170.

So is it a "sweeper" problem or something else. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are adding loft at impact. I've noticed the same thing with my swing once in a while..ie 9 iron will go farther than a 7. Then I focus on leading the club through impact with the grip ahead of the clubhead. If the clubhead gets to the ball before your hands or if you ar flippy through impact you can add loft which will make the shot fly higher than normal. Could be ball position.. mid and short irons are mostly played in the center of your stance. Is the flight starting high or ballooning? I'm definitely no pro just my $.02.

Those are some good places to start. Make sure you are hitting those wedges with your hands ahead of the ball and with the ball position at least in the center of your stance, but no farther forward. And check the center of your stance by your heels. If you flare your front toes toward the target, what looks like the middle of the stance is actually forward of center.

I have long had the same issue of hitting everything way too high. With the driver I have finally realized it's not a bad thing because the ball usually doesn't roll much after landing and thus doesn't end up in trouble. For irons and wedges, though, it can be an issue. I have recently found something that really works well for me. At address I make sure my hands are a little ahead of the clubhead (which ends up being delofted a little because of this). During my downswing I try to think of 'dragging' the clubhead through the impact zone, which (at least for me) results in hitting down on the ball and taking a shallow divot after the ball. It has also resulted in me keeping the ball on a lower trajectory and putting additional spin on the ball (especially with wedges).

Of course, there could be other reasons for high flight. The biggest reason is as 'loopy' said, with flipping the hands by getting the clubhead ahead of hands. This can be caused by improper setup, ball position too far forward, improper weight shift on downswing, or hands simply outracing the body. Other reasons that are possible are a downswing that is too steep or shafts that are too flexible (although this is doubtful since most wedge shafts are the same 'stiff' flex).

I would highly recommend you get at least 1 lesson and have a PGA Professional look at your swing. He (or She) will almost definitely see the problem right away and have ideas and/or drills to help you correct this issue.

I hit the ball very high - I have a very steep angle of attack. It's something i'm trying to change - There are times I need to hit the ball low, especially with the driver into the wind.

I changed the 3wood and 5wood and now the ball goes lower, might change my iron shafts in the new year. Deffo going to get fitted for a driver - get the right shaft for me.

whats your ball position? if you are hittin too high, it could be your shaft flex point being too low, maybe you could bring in a couple of your clubs and hit some clubs at the golf store and see if it is your equipment.

Hey thanks for the help.

I think it might be a combination of playing the ball too far forward and scooping under it--i usually don't take a divot. Also I think my wrists are lagging behind the club.

Now if only I could go out and work on it, but its 20 and snowing and windy

I look forward to all the responses to this thread as I am having the same EXACT issue. My PW goes 80-90, iron goes about 105. Good thread Hoove!

I've had this problem in the past. . .For me, I was leaving my hands open and up after impact. It was almost a "scoop" move where I was helping the ball into the air.

I've worked on a proper release, and closing the club after impact. This has helped a lot. I still struggle with it all the time.

Also, making sure you have shafts that fit you properly.

Seeing a vid, would help loads. GLuck

Hey thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure if your ballooning, you should move the ball forward, as when you move it back, you will chop more, making a taller angle of attack, making it go even higher.

Without really having a clue, and just in general, that's just about the opposite advice I'd give. I almost

never see anyone playing the ball too far forward. I know of one guy that does it regularly, but most people would be advised to play the ball more forward to encourage a weight shift through the ball. Playing the ball too far back can lead to the ball coming out high and with too much backspin. You'll hang back and flip at it. That being said, the OP didn't really give us much information to go off of, so he should take any of this advice for about what he paid for it: nada.

Another thing, I have noticed from my tendency to hit it high, is that when I want to lower the flight, I try to create extra lag, and push my hands forward through my swing, without moving my wrists.

Just talking about the irons, get your hands out front which will deloft the club at impact and also make a nice crisp shot.

I think i would be better off playing the ball farther back--right now i play it close to my front foot, any farther forward and id be playing it way out in front. I get hardly any backspin at all so i think moving it back would help.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
