I'm contemplating getting a square headed driver in the near future. I am open to basically open to any of them, I just don't know much about them. Any suggestions and the pros/cons of a square driver would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

don't go to the dark side totally joking but the square drivers are men't for forgiveness and straight drives that is basically all i think with your handicap you really don't have to go square round drivers of more workability and they don't look like a toaster on a stick

The main pro is that they are easier to hit straight. The main con is that it's more difficult to work the ball both directions (but not impossible). For the most part, though, it comes down to personal choice. You need to hit them and see if you like the feel, sound and ball flight. I know a couple people that have the Nike Sumo 2 5900 and they love it, but then they were also players that used to fight a bad slice and now bad shots are usually just a soft fade.

The only con I personally had when hitting one was the higher spin rates. Other than that if you can get past the look at address I think they offer some great benefits.

I had one for a while and it was the worst club i have ever hit. The mere mention of the club makes me want to hurl. I know some people like them i PERSONALLY cant stand them.

I enjoy the square drivers. They are generally easy to hit. My mishits are generally straight pulls or pushes.

As someone stated, they are harder to work. But then again I cannot do that anyway, so no lose.

I demoed a bunch (cleveland, calaway, nike among others) and found them to be surprisingly similar (at least at my level of play) I disliked the draw versions. The club still depends on a good swing. I have seen snap hooks and slices while using them.

Generally, people are upset with the sound. Most of the square drivers are composites -- metal and carbon fiber head, and have a distinctive "ping", much like an aluminum bat. But then again, straight and long makes it easy to deal with.

I personally am using an Acer XL driver.

I too can attest that I am not a fan of the square drivers. I inherited the first generation of Nike's Sumo Squared and could just not hit the thing. My father can crush it with the squarehead, but for me personally I just cannot hit the ball cleanly with that thing. Must've been that right at the get go I was just uncomfortable with the driver at address, and mentally that threw me off on everything, I enjoy the simplicity of the traditional driver head.

I've used contemporary drivers all of my life until the FT-i came out. now i doubt if i will ever go back (although I have been thinking about the new Adams A4). the FT-i is the straightest, most forgiving driver i have ever used by far. whether i miss hit it on the heel or toe, its still going to fly long and straight. if you like to work the ball left and right, a square driver might not be what you're looking for, although you still can work the ball with one, just not as dramatically as you can with a contemporary headed driver. i am averaging close to 80% on fairways hit this year and I have had a few rounds with 100% of the fairways hit. I've used the FT-iQ too, which is supposed to be even longer and more forgiving, but I am so used to my driver that for now I am not going to change, especially since Im averaging 80% of fairways hit this past season. A lot of people are turned off by the looks of it, but its really not a big deal at all. give one a try. its all personal preference ya know....

A square driver is a draw club.

Not necessarily - Callaway FT-i has a Neutral and Fade bias available as well as the Draw. I don't know about other brands, but it's possible that some of the other square drivers have at least a neutral bias available (perhaps the Sumo squared does since I know a couple pros have used it).

It really just depends.

I have a couple of tour heads right now that I'm going back and forth with from Bombsquad golf in the Callaway FT-5 LCG and the Taylormade Superquad 282. Both of those heads go for 1000 to 2000 bucks on Bombsquad golf.

But both of them are going to be replaced by the new Nike square head I can tell you with almost complete certainty.

The downsides to a square head is a little more spin, a little less workability, and a little less distance (probably about 10 yards tops).

The upside is straight, straight, straight, straight, straight, and straight.

They are still very workable but you really have to put a horrid swing on them to snap hook one. They can still be pushed right or pulled left. But your shot that would have been O.B. is now in the rough and your shot that would have been in the rough is now in the fairway.

There are a lot of pros that play square heads. Hell my teaching pro has the best swing I've seen in an amateur and he's going with a square head just because one shank in a tournament puts you out of contention pretty much.

My 2 cents.

I used to have the FT-i and loved it -- straight down the middle every time. I just went out and tested the new FT-iq and like it more, if that's possible. Just can't pull the trigger on $499 for a new club in this market.

A few months ago, I purchased an inexpensive Tommy Armour Silver Scot square driver just to see how square drivers work. Well, it works. I don't get quite the distance as my Taylor Made, but it's easier to hit it straight. When I have trouble from time to time keeping my drives in the fairway with the Taylor Made, I use the Tommy Armour on the course until I work out my swing with the Taylor Made on the driving range.

At first, the square head looked awkward. But after seeing the ball go straight down the fairway a few times, it didn't look so awkward anymore.
