Just something that I've wondered in the past that happened to me the other day. If you're on the putting green and a hole that's cut into the green but is not the one that the pin is in, i.e. not the one you're putting at, is in the way of your putt is there any procedure to move the ball so that hole is not in your way, or do you just have to deal with it and putt around it?

The other hole counts as a hole made by the greenkeeper and is by definition ground under repair. If it intervenes on your line of putt you can move the ball to the nearest point of relief. See rule 25-1b(iii)

The relief procedure for ground under repair or for an immovable obstruction on the putting green is covered in Rule 25-1b(iii):

(iii) On the Putting Green: If the ball lies on the putting green, the player must lift the ball and place it, without penalty, at the nearest point of relief that is not in a hazard or, if complete relief is impossible, at the nearest position to where it lay that affords maximum available relief from the condition, but not nearer the hole and not in a hazard. The nearest point of relief or maximum available relief may be off the putting green.

Which rules book are you using? According to the USGA, there is no Rule 35 c (ii). There are, however, a couple of relevant decisions.

First, decision 16/7 determines that a 9-hole course may cut two holes per green, one for use on the first nine holes, one on the second. In that case the "wrong hole" is considered ground under repair as noted previously. http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/bo...ec16.html#16/7 Also relevant is a sunken hole plug for an improperly repaired old hole. In that case, decision 25/17 says it's not a "hole made by a greenskeeper." Rule 16-1c in that case allows you to repair the damage, but you cannot move your ball. http://www.usga.org/playing/rules/bo...c25.html#25/17

A mystery hole? First off, start playing a better course.

You can take relief from damaged areas on the green, even a poorly replaced hole cut. I once saw Justin Leonard get relief in a tour event from a poorly replaced hole on a green. Not sure what limitations there are on that. SubPar
