I have been looking at getting new irons and lately. I pretty much have it narrowed down between the Callaway X-20 Tour or the Nike Victory Red Split Cavity. I just want to know if anyone have hit these and what you think or if you have any other suggestions.I should be going to GolfGalaxy this week to hit some irons and get a better idea. Any help would be appreciated

I would definately look at the Victory Red irons by nike, solid clubs and I am looking at the Victory Red Blades and have hit the complete range and find that they are a great range of clubs and I will have my new set next week just getting them made at the moment...

Of course the Mizuno MP irons should also garner at least a look. The MP52, 57, 62, & 67 (as well as several older models) are some of best feeling irons I have ever tried.

I messed around with the VR's at a golf galaxy a few weeks ago and the muscle backs actually felt more solid and forgiving than the cavitiy backs did. Weird.

between those two, i would recommend either of them, its just up to which ever one feels better to you, honestly, i love both of those irons, ut mine imho are more buttery at impact if you know what i mean

the split cavity vr irons had no feel at all when i tried them. My r7's felt more buttery than those did. I would take a look at the 57's if you want a similar iron.

I would also give the AP2s a try if you haven't already.

Have no experience with either iron you mentioned but mine set up very simulary to the X-20 Tour model.

I've been playing the X-14 Pro model since they first came out.

There is a reason I haven't switched irons....and I'll switch clubs at a moments notice.....been through 7 putters, four differnt sets of fairway woods and numerous drivers but kept the same set of irons.

I've really grown fond of this set. They look great at address....no objectionalbe offset to contend with....inspire confidnence because you can really mishit the crap out of them and still get really good results.

They are fairly workable, too.

The other key reason, I suspect, is that I'm smitten with the shafts as they fit me very well. I'm scared to make any changes.

I guess the only thing i really can do is just hit a whole bunch of different irons and see what i like/feels the best.

That's the only way to do it. It's critical that when you start trying clubs that you have no bias because you might try a brand or model that you never would have considered for whatever reason and end up liking them best. Fitting for some companies has now become somewhat easier because they can dynamically change shafts and heads (I know Titleist, Callaway and I think Nike now have this option). This is great because I have tried irons in store before with a particular shaft and not liked them, but tried them at another time with a different shaft and loved them.

One other note about testing irons. I personally find it's a good idea to get down to 2-3 models you like best and then leave. Come back another day to finish selecting irons because most of us who aren't scratch or better sometimes have different swings on different days. What feels right today might not in 2 days. That time also allows you to think about what you want and you could even research further information or reviews to see what others think (not that other people's opinions should decide for you, but I like to read what they are saying). Irons are too expensive to make a hasty decision in a couple hours based on hitting off a mat into a net or simulator. Ideally, you'd be able to play a couple rounds with them before making final decision, but very few retailers are going to agree to this. (When we buy cars they don't just let us sit in seat and pretend to drive it instead of real life test drive, so why do they do this with clubs? It's a rhetorical question, but still...)

I agree 100% with this statement. Bridgestone was definitely not on my radar until my pro put this club in my hands. It was fairly easy to eliminate the majority of the clubs after a dozen swings (or so) with each. Once I got it narrowed down to 2 it took several sessions and ultimately putting the clubs on the course before I was able to decide. Definitely keep an open mind during your search.

    • While on vacation in Punta Cana a few weeks ago I played with rental clubs, Mizuno Pro 245's with KBS Tour Lite steel shafts. Surprisingly, I was blown away, not only by the distance, trajectory and dispersion I was getting but also about how soft and buttery they felt. It got me thinking.... IT'S TIME FOR NEW IRONS! Just yesterday, at my local Golf Galaxy, I tested them again side by side with the JPX Forged (recommended by the Mizuno rep who happened to be there) which also felt pretty good. Not as buttery soft as the 245's but they did produce slightly better numbers on off-center hits. Also, I haven't played with forged clubs with steel shafts in 10 years thinking I was getting too old and that I needed the lighter weight but these clubs with that shaft felt really, really good. So that's my long and drawn-out intro to my question: Does anyone here at TST play with either of these clubs and if so, what's your opinion?

    • By today’s standards that’s certainly true, but they weren’t having any trouble hitting golf balls in 2005 so I’ve equipped myself with what was among the very best equipment around that time for a very reasonable investment. If I get to the point where I feel like I’ve outgrown that stuff, I’ll reward myself with something more current. But for now I don’t need adjustable loft and lie and modern head shape, just a good quality, proven club with a clean club face. For now I’m going to concentrate on the basics. I know you can get more yardage with newer woods, but I don’t care about distance nearly as much as consistency, and you can’t buy that for any price.
